A few questions about archiving

Hi all,

I'm new to this, and I have a few questions about archiving and copying that I'm hoping you can answer.

1) Does putting a DVD in a flatbed scanner and scanning the non-data side of the DVD (so as to capture the image on the DVD disc) compromise the integrity of the data on the DVD? I'm just curious because it is said not to keep DVDs in direct sunlight, yet they are read by lasers. What I'm basically asking is if a scanner's light is too intense for the CD/DVD.

2) I've read that putting labels on DVDs and/or writing on DVDs with non water-based markers (specifically acid-based) is bad for DVDs in the longrun. So, my question is: is printing onto a DVD via a dvd-printing inkjet an option that won't degrade the DVD over time?

3) What are some good storage methods that I could use to maximize the life of my DVDs? I am currently thinking about just putting them back into the cakebox that the manufacturer provides me with, and putting them in a file cabinet drawer or closet. Should I be doing something else? Are standard cd/dvd cases viable options?

Thanks much for any and all answers.

Re: A few questions about archiving

1.
Scanning will cause no problems. It's when disks are left out in the light for ages that you may get a problem.
2.
No labels. Use disk printing, (on printable disks.) Some people have complained that the results fate but I've not found that.
3.
You'll get a few answers to the best way to store disk. I put them in CD size double DVD cases and store them vertically in a drawer. (I can then read the printing on the spine of the case.) Saves space.
Ordinary DVD cases will be ok. Remember, you can get ones that will hold 4, 6, 8 or 10 disks. Probably even more now.

Re: A few questions about archiving

I wouldn't use sticky labels, but writing on the discs with a Sharpie or CD-R Pen is fine.

OK, so the first time I read the first post, I almost fell out of my chair laughing until I reread it & saw what was actually being asked.

Thought he was originally asking if he could archive/backup a DVD with a scanner...

I s'pose that would make a good "blond" joke, like the one where the blond puts her monitor on a copy machine to get a copy of the screen...
