Editing & Conversion s/w

I'm using MPEG-VCR, which I like a lot both for editing and viewing. Wish I had "AVI-VCR", ie I wish MPEG-VCR would also do AVI's. Ok, I could just convert to mpeg, although a recent avi I saw is very high res & don't know if mpeg can do that. Did a search and I have no clue which sw to get. Any advice?
