I'll give you a hand even though I'm guessing you went to that second-rate school in Westwood
The NEC3500 is looking pretty tough to beat right now. Burns take maybe 5-10% longer than a Lite-On or other competitor, but the NEC uses the extra time to make a really superb burn- low error rates which might be a real necessity depending upon what type of standalone player(s) you have.
I own a Lite-On and love it, but I would only recommend it if you are going to really get involved in the process and are at least somewhat technologically savvy. The main advantage of the Lite-On is that there is a hardcore group of enthusiasts who have written really useful tweaking and testing tools for Lite-On drives.
No matter which drive you get- take a look at overclocking the drive. The hardware for the Lite-On 812 and 832 are identical (similar situation for the NEC2500 and 2510). Thus, you can spend a little less money and do a pretty simple modded firmware upgrade and have the more expensive drive on your hands. Overclocking voids the warranty, but is very safe and almost always reversible.
