DVD backups won't play in car...

I just got a Blaupunkt DVD-MER for our truck. Everything plays fine with the original DVD's but our backups are very jumpy and hang up almost like the discs are scratched. I want to use backups in the car in case they get scratched etc. I'm using a sony burner with DVD Shrink on Verbatim discs. Any idea how I can fix this?

Re: DVD backups won't play in car...

you need to try a couple of +R discs with the bitsetting changed to dvd-rom. as your using a sony which is a rebadged liteon they can do bitsetting.

have a look here liteon faq

Re: DVD backups won't play in car...

Its says it can't do that because its only for DVD+R/+RW

It says my current disc type is DVD-R.

xray328:

Re-read his suggestion carefully. He is suggesting that you purchase a couple of DVD+R blank discs, and then try to burn them with the "bitsetting" changed to DVD-Rom. This will burn the disc as a true DVD-Rom disc, and that type of disc is believed to be compatible with the most DVD players.

You are correct, you cannot do this with DVD-R discs. It is impossible to do the bitsetting on the discs you own right now. However, there is a very real possibility that the DVD player in your car cannot play any DVD-R disc at all. Some players cannot. Some players cannot play DVD-Rs. Some DVD players cannot play DVD+Rs. However, most DVD players are able to play DVD-ROMs. Thus, his suggestion.

Take care,

-Bruce

Re: DVD backups won't play in car...

Get some quality media in the first place.

Bitsetting really has nothing to do with this problem as it's not really a compatibility issue but a burn quality problem caused by poor quality media IMHO.

Yo-

Second the "get good quality media" suggestion-

Good Media = Good Burns - Crap Media = Crap Burns

Good media= Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim, Maxell or any other that is also MADE IN JAPAN (like Sony or Fuji)-

Write again if it doesn't work. Include what brands/manufacturers you've tried and we can give you a bunch of others to try. Some internet retailers will send you free samples you could test before blowing money on a 100 count cakebox.

Please note that just because it's Verbatim doesn't mean it was made in Japan. While Verbatim's "Made In Taiwan" stuff is still... "ok", it's nowhere near as good as their Japanese stuff. Also, Sony's Taiwanese stuff is... garbage. As a general rule, Japanese = good. Taiwanese = bad.

Re: DVD backups won't play in car...

I do agree that his media might be a problem, but I have faced this same problem with a Dodge Caravan with a stock dvd player (don't know who makes it) It is very very picky. I have some discs that have played in it. I thought I found the answer a few months ago, with better quality 8x speed media, but they still won't play. I don't know if its a dye issue or what. I have tried -r +r and bitset +r. At first I thought the movies I backed up that were retail Dvd-5 (single layer) that were 1 to 1 backups were working but I soon found out that was not the case. I have almost given up. I guess I should start with going back through my collection and seeing which ones did in fact play, but there have been so few. Hope this helps. Good luck. By the way, the backups I make are with Verbatims, and Made in Japan Fuji's and Sony's, and all play in all my set top players.

Really????? I'm sorry for you as I have some Verbatim (Made in Taiwan) that's damn near as good as TY's with tests to back the statement up. And I'm not the only one. Don't worry if Verbatim's are made in Taiwan. But, they are the only ones that I would buy that are made in Taiwan.

I got some of the Verbatim MCC 003 "Value" discs a couple of months ago from Newegg and get constant real 95 - 97 Quality Scores burned on my BenQ 1640 and QS'ed on my LiteOn 1693s - they look as good or better than my Taiyo Yuden in either the TYG02 or T02 codes-

Re: DVD backups won't play in car...

I had a similar problem with the original installed DVD player in my van, using TDK DVD-R and DVD+R

I reduced my burning speed to 4x from Max. and everything turned out fine.

Regards,

Regards,

Unless you don't give a rip on sitting around and waiting for the time it takes for a 4X burn, and if your burner can do bit-setting, go that route and burn at 12X set to DVD-Rom. It's a lot faster and the quality remains.

Single Layer(4.7GB) write speeds
1x (CLV) = about 58 minutes
2x (CLV) = about 29 minutes
2.4x (CLV) = about 24 minutes
4x (CLV) = about 14.5 minutes
6x (CLV/ZCLV) = about 10-12 minutes
8x (PCAV/ZCLV) = about 8-10 minutes
12x (PCAV/ZCLV) = about 6.5-7.5 minutes
16x (CAV/ZCLV) = about 6-7 minutes

Dual/Double Layer(8.5GB) write speeds
1x CLV = about 105 minutes
2.4x CLV = about 44 minutes
4x CLV = about 27 minutes

Oh Yes!, I can Barely stand to wait the approx. 7 extra minutes it takes to burn.

I bit-set DVD+R to DVD-ROM as a rule BTW.
