drive won't recognize inkjet discs

I just got a printer to label my DVD demo reel to send out to employers, and it works great! What 'doesn't' work great is when I try and burn the data onto the inkjet printable discs from my laptop. The discs are fine I checked them on another comp. It seems I have the latest version of firmware for my Toshiba SD-R6112, which appears to be 1031. Does this mean I'm screwed and I have to buy an external drive for my laptop?

Re: drive won't recognize inkjet discs

What kind of discs are you trying to use with the Tosh?
DVD+R? If so, I'm affraid your drive can't handle them, only the -R/RW.

Re: drive won't recognize inkjet discs

They are DVD+R's. I'm confused as to why re-writables would be the answer if the speed of the drive is outdated? By all means I would like to spare myself buying a new piece of hardware for my ancient laptop, so if that is the case with the RW's, then that would be excellent.

Another answer is to buy inkjet printable -R discs, not +R ones.

Re: drive won't recognize inkjet discs

I looked it up on Wikipedia, but I still don't understand the difference between +R's and -R's. Also, could someone give me a rough explanation as to why to different discs would work? Forums rule!

Re: drive won't recognize inkjet discs

These guys are the soldiers of a format war that didn't come to an end just because burner and player manufactrurers came to the conclusion that it would be better to support both.
There are differences in disc structure and two organizations defining the standards:
- DVD Forum for DVD-R
- DVD+RW Alliance for DVD+R
-R was the first to come to the market and when +R came in there were some compatibility problems with some players.
The same way, at first some drives were -R and others +R supporters - this meaning they would be able to use one and not the other.
Nowadays the situation is dif and you can expect a drive to handle both - not true for home recorders, where some manufactures still support just one disc format.

Your Tosh happens to be just on the -R/RW field, and that's the reason it also can read DVD-RAM (as this belongs to DVD Forum).
If you wander why I know it - easy, it happens that I also got a notebook with a 6112.

Man, just when I think things can't get any more complicated, lol. Damn you technology! Thanks for the thoughtful response. I'll go grab some of those -R's
