Connecting devices for recording to a sound card

Greetings,
I would like to connect my cassette player directly to my sound card for recording purposes. Its a Luxman player and I believe it will send out a signal sufficient for the job. Would this be true? I also have an old turntable that Id like to connect. Someone said that it may need some kind of pre-amp between the turntable and the sound card as the signal would probably be too weak. Would this be true?

thanks

david

For the cassette player you can get an cable with rca type connectors and a 1/8th inch plug to connect to the line in on the soundcard unless you have a Audigy platinum or similar that has line inputs on the soundcard driver. As far as the turntable you need a preamp or a reciever with phono in, or a separate phono preamp . Unless you invest in a Teratec soundcard that has a built in phono circuit.

Hi David,

It's indeed possible to hook up the cassette deck (Luxman, that's a nice brand, haven't seen them in stores for some time ) to the soundcard. All you have to do is to put a 3.5mm stereo jack -> cinch cable between the line out of the cass deck and the line in of your soundcard. Fairly easy..

Now the turntable: you indeed need a special preamp for doing so. You can buy loose preamps for turntables, but if you got the right equipment, it can be done easier. If you have a device that can be used with turntables (amplifier or mixer for example), just connect the turntable to it and send either the headphones output or a record/line out to the line in of your soundcard...

Good luck!

Thank you for being so kind to take the time and answer my question. I can get the cables easily to connect the cassette (to a soundblaster live! actually) and I was thinking that i could use the turntable via my current amp into the sound card as you suggested. Problem is that the amp is in another room and i dont really want to move it. Moving the cassette and turntable to the computer room isnt much of a probem as we dont really use those much these days do we?

thanks again heaps.......
