Newbie Forum Discuss, can I fill a 680 Mb Cd (74 min)? at International Chat: General Topics forum; with Nero 5 I can't fill a 680 Mb Cd with data. It says that there is not enough space on the support, even though I try to record no more than 660 Mb. Is this normal? Or is my software too old and doesn't support 680 Mb

680 mb is not the standard data for a 74minute cd-r if using the standard Red Book.

For more info about the books check here

per default

74 minutes : 650 Mb of data
80 minutes : 700 Mb of data

You could try to "overburn" the cd-r of course and that has to be set in Nero.

Yes, 680Mb with audio, 650Mb with data. Some of the space is wasted for error correction functions when writing data. Music have no error correction functions so you may get some extra space.

Just remember ... when overburning you have to use DiskAtOnce and not TrackAtOnce.
In Nero overburning has to be enabled which it isn't by default.

740 Mb with audio- or VideoCD (800 Mb on a 80 minute CD)
The figure "680 Mb" comes from the fact that the CD-makers incorrectly take 1 Mb to be 1.000.000 bytes, when in fact 1 Mb is 1.048.576 bytes (1024*1024). If you calculate backwards you'll find a CD of 650 Mb has a capacity of around 680 million bytes (650*1024*1024= 681.547.400)
