Can CD-Recording Software be picky about CD-R media? I have a HP CD-Writer+ 9100b (HP 9140i) CD-RW drive. It came bundled with HP MyCD Recording Software. HP MyCD doesn't burn Imation & Samsung CD-Rs properly & they come out half way during the burning process. It has no problems with the HP CD-Rs & other brands like Sony, TDK & so on.

Imation & Samsung work well in Nero 5.5 & failure rate is very negligible. But, in HP MyCD nearly every CD comes out half burnt.

My drive is 80-min compatible.

It isn't the software that is picky, but the hardware.

It is well known that certain writers do not handle certain media well. Unfortunately I can't give you examples of writers and incompatible media, perhaps OC_Freak can...

I think you didn't read the whole message.

If the Hardware was responsible then, it must be the same with every CD-Recording Software. Why only with HP MyCD & not with Nero 5.5?

Yes, badly written burning software

will produce coasters but it's not really the fault of the media. What we try to assume is that the software on the market is reliable - this should be a given but it's not (no names please).

What Da_Taxman was pointing out is that the Media Catalogue in the writer's chipset is generally what decides if your media of choice is gonna work or not

What you have discovered is that not all burning software is 'effective'

Generally, a writer has to be supported by the software; any MMC compliant burner should work in most situations with any software

You have mentioned in your post that it is the Media Catalogue in the writer's chipset that decides if my media of choice is gonna work or not. Is there anyway to read the contents of the media catalogue & find out which media is supported or not.

I forgot to give some info. Earlier I had burnt near about 75-100 Samsung CD-Rs on my burner with no problems ever. But, now the Samsung CD-Rs just refuse to work.

I have a friend who had the same problem with hp MyCD
so he just kept usin nero and other cd burning software

The Media Catalogue is coded onto the chipset in an EPROM. Often it's proprietory code but I have no idea how to read it anyway.

Samsung CDs worked well with HP MyCD earlier. What is the problem now?

Can the specific batch of the CD-R media from Samsung be defective or something like that?
