Burning PS2 Games

I'm about to get the Iomega Super Drive and a PS2 and I'm wanting to know some basic information about PS2 burning etc. I'm primarily a linux user so any linux specific information would be appreciated. My questions are...

I've heard that DVD-R discs are better than DVD+R discs for burning PS2 games onto. Is this true?

Does it matter which speed I burn the games at?

I've noticed on newsgroups and bittorrent that a lot of the games are less than 700mb. Does this mean they are ripped or are a lot of PS2 games just CD games?

When burning DVD films it can be an arse because they can be dual layered. Are there any dual layered games for the PS2 and if so how would you burn them?

Can the PS2 read CD-RW, DVD-RW or DVD+RW?

Cheers,

redneon

In general yes, but it depends on your burner. If your PS2 is an older model (V4 and under) then you NEED to use DVD-R, the drive is incapable of reading +R at all. If it's a late V4 then +R is ok. V5 and up are good with +R. And lastly, if your burner is better at burning +R, then by all means use +R.

Everyone will tell you it does, but it hasn't in years. Back when burners were only 8x (CD), you needed to burn at 1x (CD) to get solid results with PSX games. Nowadays? Just don't do it at full speed. 12x for CD's, 4x for DVD's. The important thing is giving the laser adequate time to make a good burn, but too slow is bad as well now.

Either or. If the game is under 700MB for the most part it's a CD game. But oftentimes it's a compressed DVD game. Most of the games from Nippon Ichi, for example (Disgaea, La Pucelle Tactics, Phantom Brave) compress nicely to 600MB or so, but are actually 2GB games! But yes, a LOT of PS2 games, to date, have been CD games. Crash 3 was a CD game. It takes about 5 minutes to load because it decompresses everything. They SHOULD have just put it on a DVD, but they didn't. Bleh.

One or two. Gran Turismo 4 is the only one you're likely to run into. There are rip-packs on the web which will allow you to burn it as two discs or one disc with some compressed video.

Probably, not usually, and hahahaha no. In that order.

Bear in mind that Sony has put the world's SHITTIEST lasers in the PS2. If your unit is V1-V3, it's debatable whether or not you'll EVER get your backups to work.

Oh, and you are aware you need a MOD chip, yeah?

Anything that'll do a full disc copy.

Although for CD's, there IS "copy protection" beyond the physical "need a mod chip" protection. There's something called "Libcrypt". I recommend using CloneCD under Windows for PSX games. But for PS2 CD's it's irrelevant.

I just don't know which (if there's any at all) software for Linux will do a full RAW disc copy like CloneCD will. But like I said, for any modern game it's irrelevant, Sony gave up on Libcrypt a long time ago.

Also bear in mind that most modchips derive power from the laser, making it even more shittier.

First gen chips, perhaps. Not the current ones.

The NEO line of chips was notorious for this.

visit WWW.PS2OWNZ.COM DVD5Rip Forums for additional assistance in doing so.

Finally, under the VOLUME tab for Disc Name use SLPM 67003 for JAP. This 'modified' new

1. I really REALLY do not recommend using "swap tricks" to get your backup games to run. Seriously. Just bite the bullet and get a MOD chip.

2. Of course you can backup modern games on Windows. Why wouldn't you be able to?

Re: Burning PS2 Games

For ANY PS2 DVD, you can use ANY program that will copy the disc. It doesn't matter what. It's irrelevant. The DVD has no protection on it.

For RECENT and ANCIENT games on CD, any decent CD copier will work.

It's the last-gen PSX games that are the problematic ones, they used LibCrypt and you DO need CloneCD (or Alcohol, or something like that) to copy them, and I don't know if there's anything in Linux to do it.

But for recent CD games, as well as ALL games on DVD, any copier will be fine.

Re: Burning PS2 Games

Hello guys. I'm on the same boat as redneon. This may look as a hijacking but since we're discussing the same topic it's useless to post an additional thread.

I'm currently in the process of backing up my first PS2 game (Ratchet & Clank 1).

So, this is what I did untill now:

1. Entered the (legal, bought by me) disc.

2. opened DVDDecrypter, choosed ISO read mode, and then clicked "Decrypt".

3. Now I have a 3.9GB ISO Image file on my harddrive. I plan to burn it with Nero using the Image mode.
Do I need to do anything special?
Do I need to configure something with Nero's settings?
Do I need any special 3rd party applications to rebuild the Image (Though it doesn't have any protection, I think...)
I will burn it to a Verbatim 16x MCC DVD+R @ DVD-ROM using NEC ND3520AW w/ the newest Liggy&Dee FW.
I have the newest chip available in my country (Crystal Chip).

Thanks a lot in advance.

Don't do that. Just use DVD Decrypter! Mode->ISO WRITE
