Backup of my Karaoke CDG disks

This thread is about the LG GCA-4040N. Click here to see full specs

OK guys – here’s my problem…
I have a really old laptop ~ 6 years old, Windows XP with a Hitachi HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4240N writer (Options did not list this!). Until now all I needed it for was to browse the internet, however I thought it would be a good idea to backup my CDG Karaoke CD’s. So with Nero 9, CloneCD & Power CD+G software at hand, even though copies seem successful, all I end up with is music and no graphics. I’ve tried ripping them to HD first, then back onto CD – straight CD to CD copies and wasted countless CD’s to no avail!
After looking at Log output in CloneCD found this little beauty – “Device HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4240N doesn't support reading of 96 bytes subchannel data (CD+G)!”
Browsing through this forum has enlightened me to the delights of subchannel information. However, most of the information and suggestions seems to end around 2002??
The last one I read, said that this was now an old issue, as there where plenty of “Patches” out there – Which I can’t find!!!! Or that new burners are able to read subchannel data.
Not a problem I thought then, I would borrow my brother’s 1 year old Sony Vio laptop and back them up using his – Again, came across the same issue, same error!!!
OK.., here’s my dilemma….
Yes… I’m saving for a new laptop – I think that’s well over due! But….. With the problem still existing on a 1 year old Sony Vio, has again, put the question in my mind – “Not all new Burners have the ability to read subchannel data”. HHmmmmm…..
Then, I’m thinking should I purchase an external burner, which will mean taking money out of my savings and will I really need this burner when I get my new laptop……Which I’m really loathed to do.
And my question – Is there a way around this – either a firmware upgrade or software to enable this function on my existing burner, without the need for the additional purchase?
You help will be much appreciated,
Many Thanks,
Tony.

Some burners support CD+G, others don't, buy one that fits your needs. you can search videohelp for a list of CD+G burners.

Re: Backup of my Karaoke CDG disks

Try with the program Padus DiscJuggler, select the option new task-->copy cd's/dvd's from the same burner, select the drive, and in the advanced tab,put a checkmark at the r-w option and the raw read/write option, source and destination path and then burn at a low speed.....

Re: Backup of my Karaoke CDG disks

As camellote stated "Some burners support CD+G, others don't" find one that does...
And I believe with AudioGrabber you can rip CDG tracks from your karaoke CDs.....
BTW, cool name.....

Cheers

Re: Backup of my Karaoke CDG disks

Thanks for your suggestion Roadworker – I’ve just tried DiscJuggler and get an error reading the CDG Disk – “Illegal field in command descriptor block” and the project halts - it doesn't even get to the burning stage???
I’ll have a go with tOnee1’s suggestion with AudioGrabber and let you both know.

Cheers,
Tony

Re: Backup of my Karaoke CDG disks

Hey tOnee1
Thanks for your reply, just tried AudioGrabber and have the same issue, with the drive not being able to read subchannel information. – I get an ASPI error, reading through the help docs, say this is the error you get and that your burner must be able to read subchannel info.

Has anyone got any more suggestions????

It’s looking like I’ll have to take the plunge and purchase a new Burner…… Doh!
