Auto-extracting all video frames off DVD?

Greetings. Apologies if this question has been asked and the answer has been "in front of my nose" all along -- I've looked all over the place, and tried a number of different methods and programs, and, so far, zilch. I thought it was about time to just ask the more knowledgable.

Alright, now, this may sound a little strange, but... Essentially, what I want to do is auto-extract every last video frame off a DVD and save them as individual image files, no quality lost. (I would compress them through my own means afterwards.) I have only been able to find utilities that do this for video files -- decompilers -- but I *really* want to avoid needing to rip and encode my DVD before I can do a "full frame dump" if I can help it.

Much thanks in advance...

Use a player like PowerDVD and just (screen)shot the frame you like.

i know this post isn't going to help you, but you've piqued my curiousity. why does one rip an entire movie into individual images?

It is really difficult to explain in a few words. But, basically, it's for a collaborative project I'm engaged in that's doing a very hard-core analysis of an animated series, with much of the analysis tuned towards the visuals. The individual images would serve as a giant, complete archive of stills that could be drawn from on an as-needed basis. It's "overkill", but I'm still rather avid about giving this "extract all, ask questions later" method a shot.

I haven't found anything with Google yet, myself.

Maybe Topaz Moment might do it, if you can set it up to do a timed capture every second.

good suggestion, but there are 29.97 frames per second so 1 capture per second probably won't cut it.

better than my suggestion though (i'm stumped) haha

i'm just watching this thread now because i'm intrigued

I've tried doing this using FRAPS and playing my DVD at 1/4 speed -- it's not sufficient. One practical reason for the "every frame overkill" is that there actually are instances, at times drawn-out, where images or details are only on-screen for one or a couple of frames (e.g., rapid image montages), which can be incredibly frustrating to get stills of. Even step-framing hasn't been reliable for me -- frames get skipped over, and I can't always get the ones I want. Even if they didn't get skipped over, step-framing through an entire series comprised of 26 episodes and two movies in order to take my shots selectively is simply far too time-consuming for me to continue doing it.

To get an idea of what I'm up to: http://www.evacommentary.org/
It's somewhat embarassingly geeky, but... In any case...
