about DVDFab burning error

Hi, I'm new. My name is Kathi. I live near Atlanta GA and have just recently started using DVDFab, as a matter of fact I am still evaluating it using 5.0.6. I have only backed up a few DVD's successfully, and thought I had cracked the code, got the settings just right, figured out which drive to put the source and target discs into, etc. Today I tried to back up a DVD and got the following error: 116, which when I looked at the log, it said

Write error at 0 (16) - Code 03 73 03 [Medium error, Power calibration fail (CD-burner is dirty)].

The disc I used for the target is a maxell dvd + r, 8x, 120 minute capacity, 4.7 g. The DVD I am trying to back up is 154 minutes. Is the drive actually dirty, or could this be a capacity or speed problem? I hate to waste discs trying to back things up, and figure this error could be my own newness to the process.

The drive which does the burning is definitely the drive I use for most things, not just burning so it could be dirty. How do I clean the drive? Do I purchase a specific disc that does it? I am familiar enough with computers that cleaning a drive does not involve cleaning supplies.

Any help that can be offered would be appreciated.

Re: about DVDFab burning error

Hi, I am responding to my own post, but would still love some feedback on my question. I tried a different disc, a Verbatim dual layer dvd-rdl, 8.5 g, 240 min capacity, 2.4x and things are working. The disc copies, and is now writing.

I did get the message that I do not need dual layer disc. Now my question is this, when is dual layer appropriate? I assume it is more than just the capacity of the disc, but I just don't really understand. Any feedback would be very welcome.

Thanks

Re: about DVDFab burning error

Thanks for the rapid reply Troy512. I actually did retry the process, as I mentioned in my second post, and also posted the comment from the burn log in my original post.

The second disc, as I said, is not only Verbatim, but is indicated to have a greater capacity (240 min vs. 120, and 8.5 g vs. 4.7), which might have been the problem anyhow.

I would, however, be interested to know how you clean your dvd drives.

Thanks for the links Troy, I'll check them out.

Also, using the Verbatim disc with the greater capacity seems to be working, the process is verifying the disc now.

Just select your DVDRW as burner and it should work!
You have selected the combo which cannot burn DVDs.

If not, please try to find a firmware update OR/and Verbatim media.

we all know this is the real problem here.

however the firmware is not the most updated. here is what you should use KC4B.

Re: about DVDFab burning error

Two questions Troy, and thanks for the feedback, links, etc. I am educating myself as I ask questions. Thanks for your patience.

First question, you say we all know this the real problem is here ( regarding Media ID: RICOHJPN-R02-03 ) ... do you mean the media I chose? Maxell? I have read that memorex is not good, and the disc I burned successfully was verbatim. I don't understand what info you got from the media ID.

Second, probably dumb question, I downloaded the newer version of the firmware ... not sure how to install it. I know it sounds dumb, and I do know computers and software and how to install, but I am not familiar with the .rar extension.

I will become more knowledgeable as I read more in the forum, and won't ask so many newbie questions, eventually. Thanks for the input again

Re: about DVDFab burning error

yes the media is not recommended. Verbatim DVD+R 16x MCC004 and Taiyo Yuden DVD-R 8x TYG02
i purchase my Taiyo Yuden dvds here
http://www.supermediastore.com/taiyo...-100-pack.html

i use 7zip to extract compressed files.

Re: about DVDFab burning error

Thanks for the recommendation Troy. When I followed the link the dvd's were dvd-r, not dvd+r. I am still trying to understand the difference and whether one or the other is better.

Can you explain, like to a first grader, the difference between +r and -r, and why you think one is better than the other? Also, do either work in a burner?

Thanks ... I am learning a lot in these forums.
