| 15 DL fails / 2 successful / failing again Hi, I decided to start a new thread as this doesn't relate to copyright protection or brand of DVD+R DL as my previous thread was about. I recently wasted 15 dual layer DVD+R DL's. Whenever I tried to copy a DVD+R DL they would seem to copy fine except for when I'd put them in my DVD players they would grind around and not read at all. Over the 15 failed burns I tried copying using different methods / programs etc, ImageBurn, Decrypter ISO read / write etc, hard drive to Nero etc They all failed. Today I made the changes below after 15 DVD+R DL coasters then copied 2 different DVD's successfully in a row, straight after I made these changes ! Out of the 2 successful burns I made one was a Verbatim DVD+R DL and the other was a TDK DVD+R DL, so this really doesn't seem to be an issue with the brand of DVD. *I noticed on my computer that local disc D has an enormous amount of space compared to local disc C. So: *I changed "Path for Cache" in Nero from C drive to D drive. *I changed Nero's Temp files, Picture files and Imported Video files from C drive to D drive. *In Nero Transcoding Quality-Quality Setting I changed it from "Standard Play" to "High Quality" and I changed Encoding Mode from "Fast Encoding (1 Pass)" to "High Quality (2 Pass VBR)", but this was in another mode (Nero Vision Express) - this actually wasn't an option in the mode I used (Nero Express) when I made the successful burn so I'm not sure what effect those changes had. *I also deleted the version of "DVD Decrypter" I had been using and downloaded and used " DVD Fab Decrypter 3". I opened Nero Express, selected DVD-Video Files, add the AUDIO TS and VIDEO TS folders from my hard drive and successfully burned. That's the same way I used to burn DVD+R DL DVD's months ago before I got the 15 coasters.... Today I went to copy a 3rd DVD and it's burning coasters again, so I tried to copy one of the 2 DVD's I successfully copied earlier today but it turned out as a coaster also .... Does anyone have any ideas why after 15 coasters I successfully burned 2 in a row after making the changes I listed above, and now I'm back to burning coasters (doing everything exactly the same as I did when I made the 2 successful burns). I think this is the end of DL burning for me.... Thanks again. |

| Re: 15 DL fails / 2 successful / failing again Also what kinda booktype is your burner using as final format? DVD+R DL or DVD-ROM??? But as TimC says we need more detail as what it did and what error it is giving. Also vague details from what the error display or says doesn't give us much insight what is happening in that process your having. |

| Re: 15 DL fails / 2 successful / failing again Hi guys, there is another thread I made here last week here where I attached a failed burn log etc, in that particular burn I was using a TDK disc as I had run out of Verbatim discs, but I was getting the same results with Verbatim, out of th 15 failed burns the majority of the discs were Verbatim. Amazingly in the 2 recent successful burns I made one discs was TDK and one was Verbatim. This will give you some idea to the methods I have already tried, the discs either seem to burn with no error but when I try to play them will just grind around in my player and not read, or I will get Power Calibration Errors. http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=205666 Someone is telling me it's a layer break issue and the only thing that will truly solve the issue is using AnyDVD and CloneCD, unfortunetly they're not free and I tried AnyDVD some weeks ago for another reason and the trial has expired. |

| Re: 15 DL fails / 2 successful / failing again I just responded to your other thread and provided the links to the ripit4me and imgburn products as requested. Having both threads going has the potential to be frustrating. |

| Re: 15 DL fails / 2 successful / failing again Hi jeff, sorry about the double post, I considered the other thread to be full of useless info now as there have been many things suggested there that can now definately be ruled out, I thought it was making it much easier for people to read through by summing everything up in a short version, rather than have to read through many posts of now useless info.... |

| Re: 15 DL fails / 2 successful / failing again Nero does not handle the changing the layer break well. That's when the laser switches to the second layer of the disc. If this is not corrrect the burn will fail or the playback may freeze. When i first started burning DL dvds i used Nero and had the same problems you're having. Someone suggested using this method and since then it's been no problems at all. Using Imgburn over Nero will definitely help but i use this method because i like seeing where the layer break is so i can check for errors during playback.

dual layer burn fail / single layer is OK Is this a copyright protection issue ? I appreciate you were considering it would be easier, but please let's keep it all in the same thread from now on. To be honest, even though it might grow to several pages, it's the best way of letting everyone know what the real progress has been.

| Re: 15 DL fails / 2 successful / failing again I purchased 3 Verbatim DVD+R DL discs today I managed to get a trial version of AnyDVD running. I did it this way as I have had success this way in the past. *Turned on AnyDVD and selected the drive I put the original DVD in that I wanted to copy. *Opened Nero Express *DVD-Video Files *Selected the original DVD in the drive (the audio and video ts files) *Then loaded them in using "add" and selected the files and burned at 2.4X. This has been successfual in the past, but I got the Error below in the log. I don't have the knowledge to understand it. Can anyone see what went wrong and why ? In the last few seconds I can see "Key Illegal Request" and "Key Medium Error" and "Power Calibration Error". Will going through this process exactly the same except burning with CDClone and not nero really make a difference with the layer break ? I've only got 2 Verbatim discs left ? Any help is really appreciated , thanks ! | Re: 15 DL fails / 2 successful / failing again It sounds like you're burning disc to disc. You should never do that, especially with a DL disc. If you're going to use AnyDvd you should get a copy of Dvd Decrypter from here. Having Anydvd running in the background will deal with the protections Dvd Decrypter can't. If you want an exact, uncompressed backup of the movie extract in .iso mode and make sure to check create a .mds file because that's where the layer break info is. Next download a copy of Imgburn from here. Burn the image making sure to use the .mds file to load into Imgburn. You can have Imgburn calculate the optimal layer break and you should be fine. As long as you keep burning DL dvds with Nero you will probably have issues. I'm not saying that just to be negative about Nero, i'm saying that because i had the same problems as you. I've read too many times where people are having trouble with DL discs and Nero. Someone suggested the method that I mentioned before and it's been no looking back. If you don't wan't to go through all of that at least try this way.

| Re: 15 DL fails / 2 successful / failing again Yes my firmware is up do date. I know it seems wrong that I always try to burn with Nero, and it might seem like I've ignored a few tips as I have mentioned Nero after people have told me not to use it but that is because the only times I have ever successfully copied a DL DVD I used Nero ! OK I just made a successful burn !, and again, I did it a way I have actually been told not to do it.... Maybe someone can offer more info or has a different opinion... First I should say I have previously failed 2 or 3 times using DVD Decrypter 3.5.4.0 to do an Iso Read and Iso write. I did the same today but did 1 thing different, I had AnyDVD running in the background, I have read not to do that because apparently DVD Decrypter and AnyDVD cause each other problems, but someone who has far more knowledge than myself told me to do it, so I did and I made my 3rd successful burn out of about 20 failed burns... I really hope that is the end of all my problems, but it sounds too good to be true, is AnyDVD really the solution to this ? I know I recently had 15 failed burns, then 2 successful then 5 failed after that, so I hope the next few burns don't end up being failed burns.... But this time an ISO Read & Write with DVD Decrypter 3.5.4.0 with AnyDVD running in the background has worked.... Does the burn log look OK ? I 15:22:27 DVD Decrypter Version 3.5.4.0 started! | Re: 15 DL fails / 2 successful / failing again That's fine & exactly how it should be. It's also the way I'd do a 1:1 copy to DL media & the one most likely to succeed. I've never thought that AnyDVD & DVD Decrypter should have a problem working together. I'd be inclined to burn these ISO images with ImgBurn but it's unlikely to make any real difference. |

| Re: 15 DL fails / 2 successful / failing again OK, so this must mean AnyDVD helps burn the layer break properly and is not just used to crack the copyright on the discs ? Is that correct ? If not my problem isn't really solved as I had a couple of DVD+R DL discs that failed when I tried to copy them (without using AnyDVD), so obviously the DVD+R DL disc didn't fail because of copyright protection, it must have been something to do with the layer break as I have never had a problem burning single layer DVD's.... So I'm thinking my recent successful result was because AnyDVD helped burn the "layer break" correctly, would that be true ?, I thought it was only a copyright tool ? |

Decrypter should have produced a mds file. You either load that mds file into imgburn (or double click it). This retains the layer break info. Using Nero cd-dvd speed first to change the booktype to dvd-rom and then using Clonecd with Anydvd running in the background is much easier and faster than using Decrypter + Imgburn (but the Clonecd+anydvd solution isn't free). The complete freeware method is to use Ripit4me/FixVTS/Decrypter + Imgburn (again, not as simple or as fast as using Anydvd+Clonecd). By the way, when backing up movies with Nero, people generally use Nero Recode--and not whatever method you were originally using. Nero Recode, like Shrink, however, will not retain the original layer break position (nor will most transcoder based apps). Consequently, I do not recommend using Shrink, Nero Recode, Clonedvd2, etc., with Verbatim +R DL discs if you wish to retain the original layer break position. These solutions are better suited, in my opinion, for single layer breaks. Again, with these programs, you need Anydvd running in the background while using them--or use Ripit4me first. | Re: 15 DL fails / 2 successful / failing again Yeah I know AnyDVD doesn't actually burn anything, I worded things the wrong way, sorry. I should have asked if AnyDVD helps prevent in any way things going wrong with the layer break (which in the end will prevent a bad / failed burn) as I thought AnyDVD was only used for copyright protection. |
