100 MP3 VBR or 128 MP3?

I have a album in 100 kbps VBR and 128 kbps and I wonder whats the best copy?

Say that the source is the same and when Im listening to it I don't hear any big difference between the two.

The VBR version goes from 80 to 160 I think. Sry if this is a stupid question cuz I know that many factors comes in to play but... Maybe you'll have an answer

haven't you already basically answered your own question? if you can't tell the difference, you might as well go with the 100kbps rip and save space. both of those bitrates are fairly low though.

Personnelly I prefer a 160 kbps VBR Mp3 file. Saves space where needed but uses more if needed.

The one think that can happen though with a VBR file is that some progams/ mp3 players will not like it.

But its a 96 vbr file not a 160. And I sent it to a friend and he said that the 128 was better. So my ear might be damage or something :/

Womble means he likes to encode HIS mp3s at 160kbps. even if your friend can hear something that you can't, as long as you can't hear it, it doesn't really matter, right?

if you're concerned about quality, you should rerip/encode the mp3s anyway, using LAME as your encoder, with the following command line option:
Code:
--alt-preset standard

I usually use 128 or 160 & when a song is complicated, meaning lots of progression in bass or any particualr instrument, 192 works just fine for me.

You say the 100 kbps VBR file ranges from 80 - 160....if I understand you correctly.

This means that, where necessary, the bitrate is 160 and where it is not, it is 80.

I'd go for the VBR...but that is my personal (non-expert) opinion.

I rip to 196 VBR personally...with LAME encoder of course...may take up more space, but the quality is great!
