Blank Media Discuss, PC hangs when I use CDRid 1.63 to read ATIP info of CD-R at International Chat: Hardware related forum; I downloaded CD-Rid 1.63 to read ATIP info on CD-Rs. When I use it, my PC stops responding. I have the latest ASPI drivers. My burner is HP CD-Writer+ 9140i (9100b). What's the problem? I can read ATIP info from Nero CD Speed properly.

Maybe not your area this, wookie

Well, to enlighten you the ATIP is very useful to find the real manufacturer of a CD-R disc. There is loads of brands out there but only a handful of manufacturers.

So it's a good way to find the real manufacturer of the CD-R disc.

Anyway, what operating system do you use? Windows ME? I've seen this problem on windows ME a few times.

You said you have updated to the newest ASPI layer from adaptec, right? (version 4.60(1021))
But what IDE drivers are you using? Those that came with the os or some from the motherboard chipset maker?
And do you have any packet writing software installed?

Yes! I have Windows ME installed on my PC.

Yes! My ASPI Layer version is 4.60 (1021).

I am using IDE drivers installed by default by the OS.

My motherboard is an ASUS CUSL2-C with i815EP chipset. I had read on Asusboards.com that installing chipset & IDE drivers on Windows ME caused problems & the ones which come with the OS are fine.

Yes! I have Direct CD 5.01 installed on my System.

Win ME = Not good. Roxio software = Not good.

Anyway, enough about that.....but that is what my experience shows

Try to disable DirectCD(close it down before trying to run CD-R Identifier), do that help?

I once tried to fix this problem for a guy with win ME, I tried a shitload of things but the same thing happened all the time, so I'm afraid that I can't help you more.

BTW: I told the guy to upgrade to w2k and 2 months later he actually did(and this time he didn't install any roxio software either, because I showed him how good nero/InCD was), and all the problems mysteriously disappeared.

Hm, I really don't know

Is it possible to right click on it on choose close or maybe not?

Push ctrl-alt-del and end the direct CD task that way, maybe that works?

If its the Problem of Roxio Software, How can the Drive Check option of Nero CD Speed read the ATIP information of the CD-R?

It displays everything like Manufacturer, CD Speed, CD Capacity & so on.

I have tried several brands like HP, Sony, TDK, SmartBuy & other unbranded discs. It displays the manufacturers name & other details including dye type in numbers like 1 or 6 & so on. I check the number with the dye type with the article on www.cdmediaworld.com & is always correct.

However, for Samsung CD-Rs, it doesn't display the manufacturer's name but displays other information.

When you say freshly, did you install windows XP over the top of WinME, or did you do a clean format and then install.

If you Upgraded from winME to XP, then WinXP will inherit most of the problems, especially registry problems (ie nearly everything), from WinME. Especially since adaptec/roxio software is a bloody virus and leaves all it's customised settings in the registry to hinder all new CDR/W software.

Try finding and renaming scsi1hlp.vxd, it's in the beginner issues.

If it still doesn't work, make sure that the burner is detected properly in bios and that the correct PIO/DMA mode is correct.
Usually PIO4 / no DMA.

If DMA for your burner is Enabled in Windows, try disabling it. Usually not a problem, but Creative/HP drives sometime have the issue, and Smart&Friendly always.
This might not be possible in XP though.

Then try moving it to a different ide chain, some HD's disagree with other devices.

Lastly, send the burner back to the fctory to get fixed.
Every burner needs to be able to read atip information correctly because otherwise it cannot detect the capacity of the CDR/W discs properly.

I did a a clean format and then install of Windows XP Pro.

I have no other problems with my burner & don't think there is any fault in it. No problems with DMA either.

Nero CD Speed 2000 reads the ATIP information correctly.

The problem is with CD-Rid 1.63 only. Why?

Try downloading a new copy, perhaps the copy you downloaded was corrupted in transit.

Did you install the newest Adaptec ASPI layer after you installed XP?

Adaptec ASPI layer is required for CD-R Identifier to work properly!!!!

Well, it's up to you.....CD-R identifier requires it. And I always install it and have never had any problems.

It's also needed for ripping DVD-movies to harddrive from the DVD-disk(I convert some DVD's to DivX).
