New Phillips 16X DVD+/-DL burner! Which speed media?

Hello, again,

I have found through the kindness of those on this site that I need to buy TY or Verbatim media. An unusual thing happended recently, and I need a little more input. I bought a new laptop with a Litescribe 8x DVD+/-DL burner, and am discovering the world of burning DVDs.

We had also purchased 2 refurbished Dell Dimension 3000 desktops (these are my wife's computers) in the last year, and while we knew they each had DVD drives in them, we did not know that one of them had a DVD burner in it! Well, when we discovered it, (2 days ago), it wouldn't work! Par for the course, I guess.

So we called Dell (both units are under warranty) and they sent out a tech today and he installed a brand new Phillips 16X DVD+/-DL burner!! (The old defective burner he removed was a NEC and wouldn't recognize any media, no matter what the type, so I think we made out on that deal!)

Now I don't know which media to get for that unit. 8x, 16x, DL 2.4x,??? I know the brands to use, just not the speeds with a 16x burner. I don't care about time involved, just good copies. What would you use with this DVD burner? At which speed would you copy?

Also I saw on this site that if you turn over a stack of Sony media at BB or whereever, and the bottom of the spindle has an octogon shape to it, it is actually TY media. Anyone else heard of this?

Would appreciate info.

Thanks,

Dusty

The Philips could be a BenQ so if you indeed get a BenQ you'll have a great burner.

Burn the 16x media on at least 12x if not at 16x altogether. But try to find out what OEM brand your Philips turns out to be.

As for the Sony media turning out to be TY, you can read through this thread but basically the only Sony TY's media will be the DVD+/-R 1-8x Made in Japan. Please refer to the thread for the exact nitty-gritty details as not all Sony MIJ discs are TY.

Happy burning

Re: New Phillips 16X DVD+/-DL burner! Which speed media?

Hello, Drcy!!

I checked on the system and it says:

Philips DVD+/-RW, DVD8701

How can I find out if this is the kind of burner you mentioned?

And you say I should burn 16x media at 12x or 16x?

Also, what happens when you burn at too low a speed? I tried to make my first copy, and DVD shrink would encode the movie onto my hard drive, but would not burn the disk.

It said it was ready to burn the disk when proper media was inserted, I put in a Verbatim 8x DVD-R, and nothing happened. Then it opened a window that said "burning with Nero has been deactivated" in preferences.

I went to preferences, checked burn with Nero, and it just took off on its own, not giving me any speed selection choice, and I noticed the burn was at 2.4x. I don't want to stop it, but I think it is another disk I will be tossing into the trash.

Any ideas why DVD Shrink won't do the burn?

Thanks again,

Dusty

Hi
Take a look here.
Do a search for loads of threads on the 8701. You'll find results of crossflashing to. (Remember this will invalidate your warranty). As for media Taiyo Yuden or MCC seem to the ones currently.

It depends on the media.
Most 8x and 16x media burns poorly at low speed (<4x), but some media like Verbatim 16x DVD+/-R burns well even at the slowest speed, provided that the drive/firmware is properly tuned to do it.

DVD Shrink cannot use Nero 6.6.0.18 and newer version to burn directly. Maybe that is your problem?

But you can let DVD Shrink save your video to an ISO image file, and then burn the ISO image file with Nero or with other burning programs such as ImgBurn (free and very good).

Sorry about misinforming you.

The information I have about DVD Shrink not working with 6.6.0.18 and later is second-hand knowledge from other posters in the forum. Maybe it only applies to Nero 6 and not Nero 7?

Re: New Phillips 16X DVD+/-DL burner! Which speed media?

I just downloaded Nero 7.0.8.2 FREE at this site:

I paid a lot for my Nero 6 Ultra (fortunately there was a nice rebate, but dang! LOL)

Re: New Phillips 16X DVD+/-DL burner! Which speed media?

This is strange. I went to Best Buys about an hour ago and saw Nero 7 was on sale for $99!! I went online when I got back home and the Nero site has it for $79!! And there was NO free download. There was a partial trial, but not the real deal.

So I went back to the link I put in my last post, and Nero 7 was still there to download free! Am I missing something??

NEVERMIND!! I went to install it, and it was a stupid demo! Nothing is said about that until you install it either. AND it UNinstalls your original Nero! So much for that! Dang!
