Looking for Inexpensive DL for Movies

I just bought a Samsung 203B and need to buy a bunch of media for a variety of tasks. I have researched here and found a lot of useful info but am still unsure about some inexpensive but decent DL media to burn movies to. This isnt for the archiving of movies just burning downloaded movies to playback on my Oppo DVD Player.

I have listed the tasks and the media I plan on buying for each task. If you think there is a better or cheaper option let me know. Thanks!

Tasks

Archiving of FLAC Audio Files = Taiyo Yuden Premium Silver Thermal Lacquer 8X DVD-R
Burning DVD5 downloaded movies (ISO, etc.) =
Burning DVD9 downloaded movies (ISO, etc.)

Re: Looking for Inexpensive DL for Movies

There really aren't many choices for DL media. At least not for consistent quality. Verbatim 8x DL, mid code MKM003 would be my choice for a modern burner, especially since reports around here indicate it is only made in the Singapore factory.

Verbatim 2.4-6x +R DL , MKM001 (made in Singapore)would be second and MKM001 made in India would be the third choice.

If you want to take a chance on something else, I'd stick with the CMC made MAG D04 or CMC MAG D03, found under the Philips brand among others.

As for burning DL media with a 203B, you should look through this thread

For regular dvds, I like Taiyo Yuden 8x +R (Yuden 000 T02)and Verbatim 16x +R (MCC 004).

Wait for sales if price is an overriding issue. Best Buy has Verbatims on sale frequently.

Thanks for the info! It seems that the Yuden 000 T02 and MCC 004 are very solid media. I'll be taking a trip to Best Buy this week! Are there any good online retailers that sell the suggested media at one place?

Good choices both. Currently I'm loving MCC004

As for online retailers, you might try Rima if you haven't already

I hope these "movies" are not copyrighted...

Verbatim DL media is the only reliable choice so far, IMO.
they are under €2 each here, which is an acceptable price for me & my needs.

Verbatim 16X +R are MCC004. You might want to call them to ensure they will be Made In Taiwan. I have never ordered Verbatim from Rima but i have ordered a lot of TY 8X +R T02's.

Re: Looking for Inexpensive DL for Movies

You can also split DL originals onto two standard size DVDs using DVD Shrink and not use any compression or shrink a DL movie to fit onto a standard DVD.

Re: Looking for Inexpensive DL for Movies

All original works are automatically copyrighted, but the copyright owner can decide to make the work freely available.

Most downloadable movies online are copyrighted commercial movies and it's illegal to download such movies and it's against forum rules to have discussions about how to do it.

There are some movies available for download wich can be freely distributed, and since the CDFreaks forums have a policy of assumed innocence until proven guilty, we wil assume the current discussion is about downloading freely available movies that are legal to download and copy to DVD - at least until such time that additional information becomes available which proves otherwise.

Now, can we get back to the actual topic, please?

Re: Looking for Inexpensive DL for Movies

Thanks you Dragemaster.

Most of the movies I download are documentaries from two local universities. It is amazing the amount of free and legal content there is available although you have to do some digging.

I guess my main reason for specifying downloaded media was to show that it wasnt critical archive type data and so budget DVD's would suffice. Thanks again for everyone's help!

Re: Looking for Inexpensive DL for Movies

I have not had ANY problems burning DVD+R DL RITEK(SONY), VERBATIM MIS and MII, or RICOH (NEXXTECH, DYNEX) << cheap best buy and circuit city stuff.. using a Lite On LH-20A1H.. I burn at 2.4 or 4X and I DON"T get coasters.. the layer break is smooth in playback on multiple standalones. I don't get into the scanning for quality cuz if it plays fine through the whole movie then I'm happy.

Now my SAMSUMG SH-S202G would make coasters out of the RICOH media almost every time, but the LITE ON is heaven.. All this reading about people having problems I honestly think it is the drive or speed at which you burn.. because after about 20 burns with multiple so called "crap" media that burn flawless in the LITE-ON ,I just can't look at the SAMSUMG in the same way after it has wasted sooo many of my RICOH Dual Layer Discs,, I was on the bandwagon with everyone else.. Just thinking that VERBATIN was the only media that won't make coasters. True, they are quality.. but other brands will work great with the right hardware and burn speed.. hope this helps someone..

Office Depot and Ativa, GQ from FRY'S Electronics, Nexxtech from CircutCity and Staples are good cheaper media!

the point is, successfully burned means not very much, just means that you have got no coaster...
Unless you quality scan that burned DLs you will not know how good the burn really was. A TRT scan is a start.

Actually, Rima does have some stock of MIS and I requested these and they said they could not promise but would try to fill my request. And they did. I ordered 2 20-paks and they were both MIS.
