Blank Media Discuss, Kodak - Worth getting and paying more for? at International Chat: Hardware related forum; Seems that Kodak has been considered "premium" media for the proposed longevity of their disks. Though I don't understand if this is considered the same for all their media or only applies to what they produced years ago. Kodak is still selling cdr media on their web page rated

Kodak - Worth getting and paying more for?

Seems that Kodak has been considered "premium" media for the proposed longevity of their disks. Though I don't understand if this is considered the same for all their media or only applies to what they produced years ago. Kodak is still selling cdr media on their web page rated at 12x and 24x. The average selling price per disk is about 30-35 cents depending if you get the jewel case or not. I've seen these disks comapred to the Mitsui quite often here in the forums but the Mitsui disks cost close to $1.50 per disk. If they are close to the same quality why is there such a difference in price?

I have also read about Kodak media 'peeling' or going bad within a few months. This seems ridiculous to me because they are supposed to be rated for 100 years plus.

I have thousands of digital pictures of my family that I wish to archive and I'm nervous about losing them especially if media is so short lived as described in some of the posts in this forum. Can it be that the people experiencing these issues mistreat their cdr's? I'm not saying that people should lock their media in a black airtight room but it seems crazy to me for this to happen in such a short period of time. Especially when the media is supposed to be "guaranteed". Has anyone ever contacted the manufactureres? I would be interested in their responses.

Newbie question, What program is best used for checking for C1 and C2 errors? I have an older Plextor 121032a and am waiting for delivery of a new Lite-on 40X. I think I read here that the program most people use is only good for the Lite-on does anyone have a similar program that will work in a regular CD or any other brand of CDR?

Lastly if CDR is as unreliable as been shown in this forum would it be "safer" to backup to DLT tape?

Thanks for any input you guys may have.

Kodak discs are on clearance, hence while supplies last on thier website, because they were out of the manufacturing CD-R business. Another alternative for quality discs is Taiyo Yuden, much cheaper than Mitsui discs and readily available as Fujifilm brand in the US.

Nero CD Speed under the Extra menu has a ScanDisc function which can also check the files and surface of the burned disc. You can find more info at the burning software forum. If you want to know more about the WSES program checking C1/C2 errors, there is a sticky thread at the Lite-On forum.

I don't know how you got the impression that CD-Rs were unreliable, but if you don't trust that CD-Rs will last a long time, then make several backup copies with different brands and check thier quality every 3 months. Besides, most of us probably will switch to DVD media within 3 to 5 years, so what's the big deal about lasting 100 years? I still have some 5 1/4-inch floppy diskettes with data on them, but I don't have the drive to read them. Just my two cents.

Thanks for the response it just seems that with so many reports of media going bad, including TY, Kodak , etc., that it just seems CD-R media are not entirely reliable.

Do you really think that going to DVD writable media will take that long? When that happens do you think this will become Club DVD Freaks?

Woah I just checked it that url is taken!!!!!

I am just waiting for Plextor to bring one to market then I'll be all over it!!!
