Re: Falcon Pro DVD-R Archival Gold

"Gold" media is mostly marketing propaganda. Without seing serious, professional testing results, I wouldn't trust any Gold DVDR media these days (well, apart from Verbatim maybe).

1. According to several trustable sources, the reflective layer is NOT the part that is the most prone to climatic degradation in optical media, the recording layer (dye) and the bonding agent are. So what's the use to have a reflective layer that will last 100 years if the dye is corroded after 10 years, or if the disc falls apart.

2. Gold has a low reflectivity, so burning and reading compatibility are an issue in many drives, ending in poor low-level performance in many cases. What's the use of a 100 years lifespan if the disc is unreadable to start with.

3. "Gold" is known to be used as a marketing tool to sell snake oil. For example, it's widely used in high-end audio cables, with the funny argument that it would have better electrical conductivity, which is a blatant lie as copper and silver are much better electrical conductors than gold. - This marketing lie has been so widely spread that thousands of people are convinced that Gold is the best conductor. But I disgress.

OK, I'll concede that SOME Gold media seem to be properly engineered, like the Verbatim Ultralife Archival discs. They have a "dual" reflective layer, silver is still used in combination with gold to enhance reflectivity, and the Azo dyes used by MCC are known to be very stable.

Personally, I'd rather pay a difference to have a scratch resistant layer over the polycarbonate, a very stable dye and great manufacturing quality, than to have a corrosion-free reflective layer. And each time someone tries to sell me something by stamping the world "gold" on it, my baloney bells start to ring.

Yeah, most likely. I ma very curious about their quality.

Francksoy: exactly. Some retailers here in Slovakia are selling Kodak's DVD-Rs for 3,50-4,50 $ a piece... and trying to sell them with extremely stupid and dull marketing phrases...

According to Dakhaas and other optical media veterans, some older Kodak Gold media was actually very good, but they were CD-R and have completely disappeared. If my memory serves me well, currently Kodak Gold is actually MAM media..? Don't quote me on that though.

*EDIT* Found this link about the recent Kodak Gold, they're MAM-A. http://club.cdfreaks.com/f33/kodak-2...on-dvd-195730/

Newer Kodak Golds (at least those sold in Slovakia) are mostly made by MBI (but some media made by MAM-A/E had MBI MID code too) and are extremely overpriced I would buy them only for tenth or they present price.

Think I Verbatim DVD-R Ultra Life Gold is much cheaper now

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc...B_8X_Gold.html

and FTI 48x CD-R White Inkjet ( TDK MID ) should be very good media

Anyone know about this FTI 24k Gold CD-R ( MID : MPO ) ???
Thanks

Confusing. Can you find MBI-like serials on it? Or do they just have an MBI code?

Some new Kodaks are now made by MBI (they have MBI-like serials).
But older gold Kodaks with MBI MID were actually made by MAM-A or MAM-E.
Normal (not gold) Kodak DVDs are made by Umedisc, they have UME or AML MID.

The worst thing is that gold and black carbon Emtec's CD-Rs (and probably also DVD+Rs) made by MBI are still marked "Made In France"...

Re: Falcon Pro DVD-R Archival Gold

Friend of mine (EZ674) just bough one of those "gold" Kodaks. For the 5x higher price of common MBI media (e.g. Imation) you will get a nice packaged common MBI medium with a "gold" top. No gold reflective layer...

OMG.
Yet they still claim the 100 years lifespan, wouldn't they now.
Nice piece of info, pepst. Thanks.
*EDIT*
Besides, these discs are darn ugly, they don't look "professional" in the least, more like downright el-cheapo crap.
