I have a disc that was handled by a little one & it now appears to have a few minor scratches. Normally I wouldn't be too concerned with it, but this is a rare imported CD that I got & I don't want to have to buy it again. It seems to have affected playback a little & skips at one point. Not always, but I also occasionally get a 'no disc' error message in the player when inserted. I'm gonna try to back it up to a CDR, but if that doesn't work, I was thinking of getting one of these disc repair kits. Do they really work? If so, which one is recommended?

just use abit of toothpaste on a damp cloth, or try some t-cut , for really bad discs i get an old toothbrush with toothpaste on and give it a good scrub, always go from the centre to the outer edge in a circular motion all the way round the disc, and make sure you clean it and dry it off properly before sticking it in your drive, these repair kits are a waste of money unless youve got loads of discs to sort out.

When I was working for a radio station we used oil based markers and overpainted the scratch on the disc(dont use black). Write only one line covering your scratch. Another good thing would be to go and ask the nearest CD/DVD rental shop (the one where you always go would be a good start and if you know someone working there its even better) if they could repair it. Rental shops mostly have professional machines to repair scratched discs (If you ask very politely there should be no reason for them not to do it). I always do this and sometimes they charge me about 3 US$ which is still cheaper than buying a new CD or taking any other risks.

Yea I used something similar on old cds and it worked well. I have seen this kit I was thinking about getting for DVDs.

For my dvd's and those I rent with scratches, I use liquid car wax. Put a nice coat on, let it dry completely to a white powdery finish and then wipe off with a smooth, lint free cloth (I use cloth baby diapers). Works like a charm, and I love returning them better than I got 'em.

Edit: forgot to mention, its important that you wipe from the center to the outside. ALWAYS from the center ring to the outside edge in a straight, smooth motion.

I managed to get rid of a scratch using brasso. This may be a better option then toothpaste

I think Brasso has petroleum products in it. Not sure if it might have long term effects on it? But if it worked for you thats all that matters.
