The batch code confusion thread: help needed please!

*steps up to the microphone*
Ahem...
Testing 1, 2, 3
*knocks on microphone, jumps back with the sound from the P.A.*

Good evening ladies and gentlemen, thank you for coming tonight!

I've read the other thread about the Verbatim DVD+R 16x, about how to tell if they are CMC, Prodisc or MBI... well, there was me, thinking I knew something about it, when I stumble upon this:

Verbatim DVD-R 16x, 25 pack cake box, Advanced AZO, MCC03RG20, the whole shebang.

First check, Made in Taiwan, so CMC or Prodisc, right?
Second check, tall lip around the cake box, so CMC...
Third check, sans-serif font, so Prodisc or CMC...
Upper part of the case, PP, no rectangle above the recycle symbol; this has a 5 printed on the inside;
Lower part, black, PS, no rectangle above the triangle, but a 6 inside.
So far, so not good!
Next check, the batch code:
ZD5518-DVR-J47F4. Prodisc?

Well, whatever, let's take a look at some Infiniti Printable DVD-R I got just the other week, supposed to be MCC...

Ops, MCC they're not, these are CMC-MAG AM3. Dark gray base cake box, PP all over with the 5 inside the recycling symbol, no rectangles here... short lip around the upper part of the cake, different "hub", sans-serif font but looks bold.
Batch code:
CMDR47G-CTMWM0J-B07 1314

Hmm I wonder if the Infiniti DVD+R, also supposed to be MCC are really MCC...

Check, MCC004, same kind of (clearly CMC?) cake box as above.
Batch code:
ZD2651-DVR-T47D, surprisingly close to my original DVD-R Verbies

Just to throw a couple more spanners in the works:

Memorex CMC MAG M01 DVD+R Batch code: CPDR47G-CDMWP02-027
Memorex Printable CMC MAG M01 DVD+R Batch: CPDR47G-CDMWP01-009

So can someone please enlighten me as to who made my Verbies after all? Is CMC using codes other than PAP*/MAP* for MCC or is Infiniti getting their -R from CMC and the +R from Prodisc?

I think I have an headache...

Re: The batch code confusion thread: help needed please!

You seem alittle bit confused here

I will tell you about Verbatim only as I don't know about Infiniti brand .
CMC made Verbatims has serif (TNR) font for LOCK and OPEN, forget about the tall lip , short lip thingy , that's how to tell without opening the spindle . From inside they have PAP , MAP as a prefex , this applies to both + and -R (and applies to CMC's own MID under brands like HP)

Prodisc made Verbatims has sans-serif font and has a - or + in the middle of the code according to it being +R or -R

Re: The batch code confusion thread: help needed please!

The Infiniti branded discs should have similar hub codes to Verbatim branded discs (if they use the same MID) as they all come off the same production lines.

EDIT: Referring to CMC made discs

That's what I tought too, but if you take a look at the Infiniti's DVD+R MCC004 hub code, it closely resembles the DVD-R MCC03RG20 from Verbatim, both with two - in the middle of the code

I'll probably have two more batch codes to add to the confusion (or help clear it up!) in a few minutes.

Thanks for all your input so far!

Re: The batch code confusion thread: help needed please!

A couple more to add to the confusion:

Infiniti DVD-R, non-printable, MCC03RG20, MIT:
ZD3148-DVR-J47CI

Infiniti DVD+R, non-printable, CMC MAG M01 , MIT:
CPDR47C-CDMWPO2-007

What's bugging me is the lack of the "+" in the DVD+R's batch codes...

That's why I said I don't know about Infiniti

Maybe that's why they are not MCC , but again I thought CMC own MID came with TNR font for their spindles

Maybe :

A=4X , B=8X and C=16X

And of course :

P= + "plus"
M= - "minus"

So , CPDR47C = 16X +R DVD Recordable 4.7 GB

There should be another code that you didn't see

Well, if this is true, I can live with it!

But I was referring to the lack of "+" in the MCC codes, not the CMC

Actually there is, 6077E0124-10309X04, not even closely related to the one posted in there. Mine do have the "Advanced Azo+" logo butno "Pearl White".

The CMC spindles without the TNR font are bugging me too... I have some CMC MAG M01 Lightscribe from HP with the "traditional" CMC box (TNR font, "rough" PP bottom) and they don't look the same at all.

Re: The batch code confusion thread: help needed please!

Do they work good though? If they do, who cares?

Anyways, if it looks like this and has a high top lip, it's CMC made: LOCK OPEN

If not, it's prodisc. That's pretty much how my experiences have been.

Do your burns work well in all players? Then why test them?

Yep, the problem is there's no Times New Roman anywhere on the cakebox (the LOCK / OPEN are written on something from the Arial family) but there's no "Prodisc typical +" on the DVD+R batch codes either.

To answer your first question, they work just fine (at least the Infiniti +R ones) and I'll post some scans later; all this "fuss" is caused by the "CD freakiness" inside.

Re: The batch code confusion thread: help needed please!

The ZDxxx code is not the one you need to look at, it's similar for both Prodisc and CMC made MCC. Look close to the center hole, in the clear area. It's really hard to read so use a led flash or something... CMC made should start with MA or PA.

Thx for the tip

I just tried with a CMC made Memorex, it starts with PEP. I'll check my Verbies later at home

Re: The batch code confusion thread: help needed please!

Ok, just got another Verbatim cake box from the same store, this time +R.
Times New Roman on the LOCK / OPEN, Advanced Azo+, MIT, Mitsubishi Chemical Company, Verbatim 2004. Up until now everything points to CMC, right?

So as they say, the proof is in the pudding, and indeed the batch code starts with PAP. CMC then. As a side note, these have the "frosted" hub.

Re: The batch code confusion thread: help needed please!

Congrats on finding the right media, Filipe M.!
Keep in mind that the Mitsubishi Chemical Company, and (C) 2004, and DataLifePlus only work with 10 and 25 disc cakeboxes. For the 50 disc cakeboxes, those characteristics aren't there even with CMC media, so you would have to look for the font.

Tip of the day: Verbatim/Prodisc 25 disc cakebox bottoms often have a Taiwanese recycling icon on the bottom while CMC don't.

Thanks kg_evilboy, I still have to check the -R I bought yesterday and the MCC coded Infiniti's I got a while back, but at least I'm starting to feel I'm on the right track now.

Well, confusion solved now, my Verbies -R are Prodisc made, the +R are CMC and so are these Infiniti Printable +R.

Time for some cakebox photo session maybe?
