Same Media code, different DVD brands

Are all DVDs with the same media code, identical & identical quality.

I have threee brands TDK, Maxell & Philips. All are DVD+r 16X. All have the same media code CMC MAG M01.

The Philips plays in my home DVD player, the Maxell and the TDK don't. I just bought 100 Philips DVD with the media code CMC MAG M01. They are still unopened. I don't want to keep them if they will be problems.

Does CMC make a better quality DVD for Philips rather than TDK & Maxell despite the fact they have same media code?

Re: Same Media code, different DVD brands

Hi tai69,
yes, most manufacturers offer a different quality grades of media (even the biggest manufacturers like Ritek, CMC Magnetics or TY).
For example, Memorex is selling a B-grade of CMC DVDR media while HP is selling an A-grade.
So it seems that your Philips DVDs are of better grade than TDKs and Maxells. Personally I do not have any experience with CMC made Philips DVDs but the TDK and Maxell ones made by CMC I had were very mediocre.

Re: Same Media code, different DVD brands

My computer DVD player will play all the DVDS but my home DVD player (Sony DVP S360) will only play the Phillips. The Phillips were from the same spindle and my friend burned them.

What DVD burner do you have?

Burn them at 8x for best results

My friend burned all these DVDS & I am not sure what kind of burner he has.

I have a Matshita I think it is a BD-CMB UJ-120, it is at home and I am work so I can't check.

It's not that simple, but it's not far from the truth to answer: yes.

This culture of "mediacode is all that matters" has become a very nonsensical thing. In the old days, maybe it was a good thing to choose discs from the mediacode only, because compatibility with firmwares were perhaps more widely important than absolute manufacturing quality.

Now it doesn't make sense. Whatever some like to write over the Internet, there ARE different grades of discs on the market, and some brands seem to consistently sell the lower grade, and some other brands the higher grades. This is mainly true for large manufacturers like Moser Baer, CMC and Ritek (see Ritek: mainly crap under Rimedia or Arita, decent to good discs under Ridata or Traxdata, with lots of in-the-middle stuff). But even Taiyo Yuden has different grades! There is the "value line", and also TY discs sold as Verbatim are often of lesser quality than both TY "regular" lines or Verbatim's own MCC discs (the ones sold as Verbatim, that is (MCC under other brands is, very often, either fake or low quality).

So pick mediacodes for drive/firmware compatibility, then pick brands (or lines, in some cases) for quality. I'm oversimplifying, but that's the idea.

Re: Same Media code, different DVD brands

I use Verbatims with MCC004 Mediacode (100 Spindle for 25€), most are good quality (PIE < 16, PIF < 6) but some are not so good (PIE < 40, PIF < 16), equally to the CMC MAG AM3 sold under the label "Platinum" in Germany (PIE < 40, PIF < 12, 50pcs cost 22€)

I burned all of them with 8x speed, because my LG burners tend to produce visible light and dark "rings" on the discs when burned with higher speeds..

This is normal for drives using an aggressive WOPC [like the LG], or when writing in Z-CLV. Don't worry about them.
