XviD to DVD problem (with DVD2SVCD and CCE SP 2.50)

Hi

I have been encoding AVI to DVD using DVD2SVCD and CCE SP for a long time and never had any problems up until recently. Unfortunately, this particular encoding attempt was my first in months and it seems that my CCE SP just crashes for some reason. I don't even see it crash, as I sleep while I encode but I have gotten up to see that it crashed at different stages, like for example, one day DVD2SVCD just said 2% and another it said 66%.

My Computer Specs:

AMD Athlon 2.6GHZ
1GB SDRAM
500GB overall HDD space (about 100GB available)
Windows XP Professional SP2 (maybe SP2 is the problem? this is probably my first encoding attempt since I installed it)

AVI file Specs:

Video : 1.21 GB, 1444 Kbps, 23.976 fps, 640*256 (2.50:1), XVID = XVID Mpeg-4
Audio : 164 MB, 192 Kbps, 48000 Hz, 2 channels, 0x2000 = AC3 DVM

I have the appropriate codecs installed (oh btw, im using Koepi's XviD Codec)

I don't have D2SRoBa installed (sorry but I just don't see the same quality as multi-pass on my TV, just my opinion) so I'm using plain old DVD2SVCD 3-pass encoding with CCE SP 2.50. I have the latest DVD2SVCD installed also.

I have tried NTSC to PAL (need it because my DVD player doesn't play back NTSC very well) but it's important that you also know that the same thing happens even if I leave NTSC to PAL unticked.

Here is the log from DVD2SVCD, you will see how it just gets cut off....

And that's it, no explanations as far as I can see. I didn't even get that horrible warning from XP that CCE SP 2.50 had to be closed or anything.

I have tried re-installing my CCE SP 2.50 but that didn't help. I also tried completely removing DVD2SVCD and installing it again, obviously didn't help. I have tried CCE SP 2.50 on both Normal and High Process priority (I just thought maybe I had a hardware problem and the CPU demand was just to much for the operating system.) I have nothing else running at the same time as the conversion (no A/V or screensavers or anything like that).

If anybody could help at all I would be very greatful, I'm completely lost on this one. Thanks in advance!

BTW... excellent site, I love to scan over it, ful of very inteligent people (incl. you, Chickenman)

Re: XviD to DVD problem (with DVD2SVCD and CCE SP 2.50)

Well, sounds like your done everything right. However, in my experience, CCE only crashes like how you described with overclocked systems, failing memory chips, failing CPU fan, etc. Even Memory running in Dual Channel mode (on my old Asus 7Nx ??? m/b) would crash CCE 2.50. Switch to CCE 2.67 and all is fine, except it runs like a snail on Vallium

It could also be the actual AVI. Suggest reencoding it to Xvid (at a higher bitrate than the original to minimise any quality loss) using VirttualDUBMOD. Also ripe out the AC3 and run it through BeSpice to make sure its not the problem and remux it back in. Its only 2ch AC3, even worth demuxing, converting to WAV (BeSweet) and re-mux the WAV back in.

Re: XviD to DVD problem (with DVD2SVCD and CCE SP 2.50)

I recall having a similar problem & I think it was down to a corrupt Xvid codec. I physically deleted the xvid files from system32 & the xvid directory (within system32 in my case). I then installed xvid again but I don't think I was using the same version as you.

This was some time ago so I'm not 100% sure of my facts.

BTW I'm running the same set of apps as you under SP2 without any problems.

Hope this helps.

Re: XviD to DVD problem (with DVD2SVCD and CCE SP 2.50)

ChickenMan, you may be right indeed. I have had some computer trouble in general lately (which is why I took so long to reply). I also noticed my CPU tends to overheat much easier than it used to during CPU intensive tasks. However, I dont have to worry about it because I will have a new PC in a few days so it won't be a problem anymore :-)

Thank you for your help :-)
