why the war rages on...

My theory as to why we don't have a blank dvd format.

I think the reason is simply because of no other than the MPAA and RIAA. I believe that they have made deals with companies like sony, phillips, toshiba, etc. to make such a mix up that it helps to slow piracy.

I find it rather interesting that shortly after the movie sharing business began, dvd burners began to pop up. As we all know, the MPAA and RIAA are getting so pissed that lots of people are getting stuff for free they decided to cut deals to slow down piracy.

Think about it. Most movies that you buy on dvd are more than 4.7GB which is currently the only capacity thats available to us. And, the war between dvd-r(w) and dvd+r(w) continues to rage on. The MPAA doesn't want there to be a standard dvd format now or anytime. I just read the article about the format war with blue laser. I'll bet the MPAA is behind this.

They saw how piracy skyrocketed with the purchase of cd burners and file sharing and the such, and mostly because, there was one format to choose from on blank cds, sure you had cd-r and cd-rw but it was based on the same format, not like dvd-r(w) and dvd+r(w).

That's my theory, tell me what you think.

note: i don't have any proof. This is all just my opinion.

The DVD+-war has nothing to do with piracy.

DVD+R and DVD-R are played in most players, and RW media is nonsense for pirating.
You just have to decide for one if you buy one. Their war keeps the prices low for media, and Sony will make a good deal with their DVD[+|-]R(W) writer.

Dual-sided writers ?

Its dual-sided media and the Pioneer 104 has been able to write to those disks for a long time.

I think he means dual-sided in the sense of "one side = -, the other side = +"
