Tmpgenc Plus MPEG-2 error mesage

In TMPGEnc plus 2.524.63.181, I am trying to use the KDVD (352 X 480 Half D1 NTSC) template to convert an AVI file.

Everything goes fine until I go to encode and I get a warning that "to playback MPEG-2 file, DVD player software needs to be installed on your system. MPEG-2 files cannot be played without such playback software." If I try to encode anyway, I get audio but no video.

All my programs play MPEG-2/DVD just fine, so I don't know what the deal is. I tried installing Mainconcept MPEG codec as well as the Stinky codec; neither changed the behavior of TMPGEnc plus.

Please advise.

You could install VideoLan VLC to see if that'll pay the video. It'll play most thing without the need for any installed codecs.

Actually guys, if you read my post closely, you will see that MPEG-2 playback is not actually a problem. The problem is that Tmpgenc won't convert an avi to mpeg-2 because it THINKS I am missing a codec. I have already tried a couple of standalone MPEG-2 codecs to no avail. Again, my system already plays DVD/MPEG-2 just fine. Just re-read my original post. I was very clear as to what was and wasn't going on.

Sorry about that.

I've just tried the same on my system. Get the same message but I get the video but no audio.

I've just made Direct Show Multimedia file reader as the highest priority in the VFAPI plugin list & now I get video & audio.

I think in the past I've just checked the box to not display that message.

If it says a codec is missing then it is so.
I've worked with this tool since years. I think I know how it works.

Re: Tmpgenc Plus MPEG-2 error mesage

-chef-, I am happy to concede your stated experience and know-how with Tmpgenc, but I will reiterate that I do not need any codec not already present. Avi and MPEG-2 files play back on my system, in general, just fine. This is true with numerous playback-only programs. The problem is in encoding avi to mpeg-2 from within Tmpgenc. The issue, then, is Tmpgenc-specific. I get a message about MPEG-2 playback software/codec not being installed on my system when trying to convert avi to mpeg-2. As evidenced by the fact that other programs play these video files just fine, then this is obviously NOT true. I took Tim_C's suggestion about modifying the priority of the Direct Show Multimedia filter and that solved the problem. I did not need to install any new codec. Thanks for snapping at me from the beginning and all, but your suggested remedy was entirely incorrect.
