Slow / Choppy DVD playback when converted from xvid

Hello everyone,

First sorry for my newbieness... I started trying to burn DVDs yesterday. Anyway, here is the deal:

I have a divx:
fps: 23.976
frame size: 576*240
Xvid MPEG-4 Codec.

I want to burn this on a DVD, here is what I did: use TMPGenc to encode it (I tried first with the wizard and then without the wizard by selecting the parameters myself) and after that I authored the dvd with DVD-Lab Pro.

Everything works fine and I can watch my dvd with the dvd player but there is a huge problem with the DVD playback:
it appears "slow" or a bit "choppy".

I have tried various settings but always got that same result. I don't have that problem when watching the divx on my computer.

As I have no idea all those video things work, I thought of a few parameters that might produce this effect: interlacement/desinterlacement, 3:2 pulldown and framerate.

Any idea what I could do to make the movie more smooth?

Thanks in advance.

Re: "Slow"/"Choppy" DVD playback when converted from xvid.

It might be because of the 24fps. Judging by that and the frame size, I recommend you burn a VCD or pair of VCD's rather than a DVD for this movie.

To make a 24fps VCD, go "Wizard" -> "VCDFilm."
For sizing, try 1:1 (VGA) and have it resized using "Full Screen (Keep Aspect Ratio)."

Hi,

My guess is you selected NTSC instead of NTSC film. NTSC has a frame rate of 29.97 which can explain the slow or choppy playback easily as there is a massive difference in the source and o/p frame rates. Even if you did select the NTSC film option then there should ideally be no problem.

The problem with NTSC is that the frame difference is 6f/s so every second there would be a spare of 6 seconds which the encoder would have to fill by duplicating 6 frames every second in order to fill the 29.97 frame rate requirement of NTSC which in turn would explain the choppy playback.

Is there a solution to this? I have wasted so many blank DVDs trying to burn the avi files. The files i'm trying to burn has the following file info:

Video size: 640x480
Audio: 48000hz, 16bps, 2ch
Length: 0:43:35
Bitrate: 1387kbps

I get choppy, slow moving video and audio completely ahead and out-of-sync.

Holy walking zombies Batman.
You've brought a thread from 2004 back from the dead!

What is the fps measurement for your avi file? Are you trying to convert 24fps over to 29.97 like the original poster?

What program are you using to convert the avi? Have you tried the usual suspects, like ConvertXtoDVD, or DVDFlick?

And by chance is the audio variable bit rate encoded mp3? That particular type of audio is known to be problematic when converting.
If you don't know, check the avi with Gspot video utility.

I bet the new V of ConvertXtoDVD will do it just fine.
