Thanks for your input Gurm, I'm sure it has helped I also see absolutely no reason to close this thread either.

There's a Dilbert strip where the pointy-haired boss says:

This entire forum is supporting fair-use, and as such we discuss areas which the MPAA/Microsoft/etc. would like us to think are "illegal" just to talk about. And in the USA they very well might be! You've participated in discussions about DVD Decrypter, and yet DVD Decrypter is completely illegal according to the DMCA - even to DISCUSS!

So please, no false moralizing here. I know your problem is the sketchy "warez" nature of these tools, but frankly the Japanese guy writing them has every right to be concerned. Lightning UK! got shut down by Macrovision, and frankly RipGuard isn't worth nearly as much as MS-DRM!

And there certainly ARE fair-use applications for this. If I buy a movie, I expect to be able to watch that movie. I do NOT expect to be told "yeah we're no longer giving out licenses for this movie", something that many people dealing with DRM have run into. "Oh, you should have watched it sooner... too bad!"

Are the movie companies justified in doing this? Maybe, according to the DMCA and their draconian interpretation of how copyright ought to work. But it's very similar to other areas we discuss here.

It's all good!

"sketchy "warez" nature of these tools," And perhaps virus laden code.
And all the 1 count posters patting themselfs on the back row after row.
You got that right.... from minute 1 with all the magic zips files in 14 parts.

Fair enough Mr. Gurm
good answer

Oh I admit it's been sketchy. The author has ONLY released his work over a Japanese-only P2P network called "winny"... which one guy over on the Doom9 forum knows about. And early versions were bizarrely bad code. And 99/100 of the filedumps out there have the bad old versions, all warezed up into multirar packs with trojans and crappy instructions.

Re: Removing DRM from WMV ???

I'm confused. I just bought and downloaded a WMV video from 7Digital but the video is DRM protected so I cannot convert it to put on my ipod. Could anybody give me a walkthrough on how to remove the protection? I have WMP 10. Thanx.

It's so funny to wonder about that.
Of course microsoft guys already know all about this.
Microsoft just introduce this protection scheme -DRM.
Providers use this type of protection to protect their medias.
Microsoft not loss anything with this DRM crack.
Media Providers not loss anything if we unprotect the medias.
Microsoft and media providers get money.
We will loss our money if the media still protected.

Conclusion: DRM protected media, 80% no supports/license backup/renew
Fair use - we own what we paid, they got money what they sold.

Warez scenes always bullshit.

Thanks.

Gurm: I did a little experiment using the keyword you said "drmdbg" 8 pages later in both msn and Google this site was not even mentioned once. Your typical NOB would stop at one or two at best, not eight or more. The good news is that the links to those supposed files are long gone making this entire thread irreverent.

Re: Removing DRM from WMV ???

TUTORIAL PART I: PREPARATION AND INTRODUCTION

Ok folks, we're back - and AS PROMISED I'm going to be more specific now.

HOWEVER, there are some caveats.

1. No PM'ing me asking for more specific help. Keep it in this thread. Seriously, I mean it.

2. I claim NO responsibility of any kind for any information that might be wrong, inaccurate, or demonstrative of a flamboyant disregard for "the truth".

3. If you SCREW UP your machine playing with this... NOT... MY... FAULT.

Ok, with that, let's get ready. I only have a few minutes now, so what we need to do is PREPARE ourselves!

----------------------------------

Step 1: Know what this can and cannot do.

This process ONLY unwraps DRM from around a WMA/WMV for which you already have the license. Yes, that's right. You must currently be eligible to play the audio/video AT LEAST ONCE. Stop now if you have any of the following:

- An ancient, expired license for the material. Unless turning back the clock works to make it play again...
- Something you downloaded from Kazaa that's all garbled.
- Something for which you have no license.
- Seriously, YOU NEED THE LICENSE.

I know what you're saying - what GOOD is this process if we need the license? Well, here's the thing...

The encryption on these files CAN'T BE BROKEN. Seriously. Most half-decent cryptography nowadays is non-trivial in nature. This means that it would take supercomputers and math whizzes to undo it. You know how you always see people in the movies and on TV beating encryption? That's fake. Seriously! Even supposedly "insecure" encryption like 64-bit WEP on wireless networks? More than you or I could do, period.

So what we have to do here is an end-run AROUND the encryption. The media player has to be able to decrypt it to PLAY it, right?

What good is that? Lots of good. Remove the DRM now, watch it even after the license expires. Remove the DRM, and do whatever you LIKE with the file. Convert it, copy it, move it, burn it, etc.

Step 2: Do you have the right software?

No, I'm not talking about the actual decrypter. That'll be posted in the next part of the tutorial. I'm talking about your OS. You need Win2k, XP, or... well that's pretty much it. MAYBE 2003, although I'm unsure of what the base level DLL's in that OS are.

Next, you need WMP9 or EARLY WMP10. Go check the version number on your WMP. (That's Windows Media Player!). If you have WMP9, you're good. If you have WMP10, you MIGHT be out of luck here... here's why. I am NOT going to provide instructions on how to screw up your system. Well, I might link to them. But essentially, downgrading your WMP is a pain in the rear end. I don't recommend it. If you insist on trying, a link will be provided in the LAST PART of this tutorial, filed under "stuff I don't recommend".

So if you have WMP10, the key version number you're looking for is ... 3646. Anything 3646 and older is great. Anything newer, and I can't guarantee that this will work. Don't worry, you can still TRY it. I'll show you the point at which it will fail if it's going to.

Now, here's the tricky part. Let's hope you haven't installed the recent MS Media Update. It's called "Windows Media Format Runtime". It completely screws up this process. Uninstalling it MIGHT work. You can do that through the add/remove programs control panel applet, making sure to check "show updates" at the top. Find it and remove it. MAYBE that'll fix the problem. Maybe not, too.

Step 3: Oh carp, I'm in trouble!

I hear it now. You've got the latest WMP10 (3990 as of this writing) and the latest updates, and don't know what to do. Don't want to hose your system trying to uninstall, but want to do this process. Well, don't despair! The author of the tools we're using keeps updating them. He hasn't released an update since before Christmas, but we hear there will be a new one any day now. So just get the rest of the software, follow along, and I'll show you where it will fail if you have the new stuff. Ok?

Or... you could run VMWare (recently renamed by Microsoft to something silly) and make a fake partition a few gigs in size, then install Windows XP onto that partition and not run ANY updates. That's what I did to test this out the first time.

-------------------------------

All right, that's it for now. Tune in later tonight (or tomorrow morning, if I'm lazy) when I'll do tutorial part II: obtaining the software!

(For those who aren't very good at inference, part III will be actually doing the decrypting, and part IV will be followup, troubleshooting, etc.)

Can someone on this thread give a clear answer on how to remove drm from a wmv file if you have the licence? Also where to download those drm programs for removing the protection?
Thanks!

Did you NOT read part one of my guide?

I'm working on part 2 now, but I have a 4-month-old infant with a series of allergies, so he's pretty demanding on my time!

Patience, all will be revealed VERY SHORTLY. I just removed DRM from a bunch of porn this afternoon, just to make sure the process is 100%. It's EASY, too.

I have downloaded drmdbg031 and drm2wmv1241 from some website. When I run drmdbg.exe file, it opens windows media player and a dos window. When I open my video file using open menu in media player, in the dos window, I could see this -
