Problem with Subtitle Workshop and mkv files

Hello
I`m trying to synchronize subtitles with Subtitle Workshop. The video is in mkv file and the subtitles in srt. I`m using Vista 64bit. I have installed ffdshow both in 32 bit and 64 bit. Media Player Classic (32bit) is using ffdshow (judging from the icon in the tray) and is playing the mkv files just fine. Subtitle Workshop does open other video files like divx and mpeg fine by using ffdshow. It just refuses to use it to open an mkv file and reports "cannot render media".
Any ideas what`s wrong?
Thank you for your time....

Ask those WHO have created that mkv file then.
