Problem with codecs

Hey I got a problem with codecs, if I setup divx or any other codec it doesn't show picture but I can hear the audio of the file. I got installed only xvid codec and it plays some of the .avi files but the rest needs the divx codec. Somebody told me I got to format the windows and install again so I can be able to play the files. Is there any way to fix the problem without format? I tried to play the files with BS Player, Winamp, VLC Player, Windows Media Player Classic, Micro DVD and Real Player Gold but I couldn't get it working. Can somebody help me fix the problem?
Thanks in advance.

Welcome to CD Freaks.

You should be able to set up Xvid to take over the Divx decoding. Certainly as an install
option that is available. I've only got Xvid installed and don't have any issues like you seem to have.

BTW I don't think that VLC requires any codecs to be installed.

Re: Problem with codecs

Thanks for the welcome.

Xvid is the only codec I got in my computer and it's able to play some .avi files but not everything. And yeah VLC doesn't requires any codec but I can't play the files with it.
I know the files working cause it was able to play them before but now it can't.

Re: Problem with codecs

For all my codec problems I use the K-Lite Codec Pack. Believe is at version 2.78 now

Whilst this maybe one of the safer codec packs to install , it's far safer to install only those you need as when they're needed.

What do the likes of GSpot and AviCodec say about the files you can't play?

Re: Problem with codecs

I'm out of ideas U'm afraid.

Do you have any software to convert to VCD.SVCD or DVD format , like Nero Vision? Just wondered whether that might work.

I'm not suggesting that as a solution , just something else to try.

Yes, just to see if it can be converted.

Re: Problem with codecs

In your first GSpot pic you didn't hit 'Render', try it and see how it goes.
