need to add .idx and .sub files to .avi file

I have just gotten the .idx and .sub files (English translation) for an .avi file I have. I know the .sub file contains the bitmaps of the subs and the .idx contains the timecodes and byteoffsets for the .sub file. I am assured that the time codes match the video stream for the avi in question.

Here is my question: Can a add the subs as .sub and .idx back to the movie (hardcode and burn it to DVD) or do I need to convert the .sub file to an .str before I can use them? If so, what tool can I use to run the conversion to srt on the sub/idx?

I have SubtitleWorkshop, WinMPG Video Converter, DVDLab Pro, Nero 6.0 and all of the necessary video and audio codex installed. I also have SonicMyDVD Studio Delux but stopped using it because it doesn't do much except the simplest editing.

I am able to watch the avi now in WMP10 with sound but no subs appear even though WMP is configured to use subs if present (prob because the files are seperate).

Any help out there?

And you call that a newbie question? *LOL* - All I can do for you is report the post to a mod so it can be moved in a more "advanced" section...

Good luck

Thanks Francksoy. I'm a network technician - A+, Network+, MCP WinXP Administrator, MCSA... Been in the business for a while but new to a lot of multimedia. It's a specialist info-set and I'm trying to ramp up and having a blast!

I'm a newbie to CD Freaks. Great forum. Love this place already. Seen some posts that border on flaming though. I hang out in a couple of forums on the Well where that's expected - rough crowed, like an episode of Deadwood or a Jack Womack novel (I write Sci-Fi).

Thanks for passing this thread on to a higher power. See you around the posts.

Re: need to add .idx and .sub files to .avi file

if you want to play your avi together with subtitles download vobsub . then check the file name of your avi / subtitles file, must be same - mymovie.avi / mymovie.srt or sub

hope this is what you want

Re: need to add .idx and .sub files to .avi file

I'm assuming that I also rename the .idx file containing the time-codes?

Re: need to add .idx and .sub files to .avi file

Just try it, won't hurt.
Normally you won't need the .idx.

Re: need to add .idx and .sub files to .avi file

I'll get back to this link later in the week. I'm swamped with client network issues right now but want to complete the vid-project by the weekend. I'll post by then...

Thanks.
