| My Method vs Others? Hi all. Just got a DVD-RW drive, the SDR-5002 from Toshiba. So I started looking into the best way to use it for Video backup, and I was thinking that having a DVD writer would get me away from the millions of different ways i read about for DVD->CDR. Geez what a mess. So I read all about DVD-Maestro, DVDXCopy, Sonic software, etc etc. Heres how I am doing it currently. Keep in mind for small DVD's I use DVDDecryptor and copy them as-is. This is my method for larger ones. ---------------------------------- This is the method I am familiar with, for ripping my DVDs and encoding to DivX or VCD, slightly modified. STEP 1)CladDVD XP - Rip the DVD to a .WAV file and a .D2V project file for TMPGENC. Framserve options on etc etc etc, basically following the VCD tutorial on CladDVD XP's home page. http://www.clonead.co.uk/ STEP 2)TMPGENC - Using the newest version I load the .D2V project file in, and the .WAV file, and use the wizard/load the template, for NTSC MPEG 2 format. I turn on variable bitrate and turn up the precision. I can even split big DVDs in 2 in TMPGENC. This gives me my .M2V and .WAV file for MyDVD. STEP 3)SONIC MYDVD - I load up MyDVD, import the .M2V file which brings the .WAV with it, choose a skin for the startup still image, change the title screen text, and hit burn. ----------------------------------------- Is there a better burning program I can use? Most of Sonic MyDVD's features get wasted on this method, its just used for burning. Tips on TMPGENC options? VBR vs CBR? What an optimal bit rate to encode DVDs at? 8k? 7k? Is there something wrong with this method? Am I losing alot of quality? Is there any other additions/improvements to this method anyone has? |

| The best burning program is the one that works for you. Some people dont like Nero, while others have always had perfect results from it. VBR will be better than CBR at lower bitrate settings. I alway choose VBR but I use DVD2SVCD with CCE (not TMPGEnc) to do the encoding and it will always adjust/maximise the bitrate to exactly fill the DVDR. There is nothing fundermenatlly wrong with your method, if it works for you stick with it. I do it totally different. Are you loosing a lot of quality, arr... yes you are by using a WAV file for your audio, its substantially bigger in size (so reducing Video accordingly) than the traditional AC3 sund track. Suggest you use AC3 Machine (which uses BeSweet) to convert your WAV to stereo AC3 Have a read of the way I do it here http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread....threadid=62671 or even have a look at the new program called DVD2ONE. Just use the search button for it here. |
