MPEG 2 SVCD need some information

I have captured some video into MPEG 2 format. It plays from my PC fine in very good quality using Power DVD/ Win DVD. However, Nero will not burn without having to re-encode due to standard compliance. I know what Nero's encoding is like, and to say the least its not too good. I use TMPGenc but it will not open my file. It says that it is unsupported file format. My file is MPEG 2 which I know TMPGenc supports.
The error is as shown.

I have also tried PVAStrumento, but I dont really know how to use it. When I try to cut the MPEG in MPEG tools (in TMPGenc) it either hangs or sometimes says that there is no Video Stream. I know there must be video stream because I can watch the film in high quality via Power DVD.
Any pointers would help.
Regards.

DVD2AVI should solve this. This application will make a project file out of the given MPEG 2/VOB file and adds a plugin into TMPGEnc in order to make it support the project file and thus decode VOB and MPEG 2 files.

TMPGEnc is probably one of the best MPEG 1 encoders out there and when I play back MPEG 1 clips converted from DVD on a TV, there is hardly any blockiness in it.

I had the same problem before using TMPGEnc to convert MPEG 2 clips as I love to stream Digital Satellite MPEG 2 to my hard drive using the EuropeOnline.net Skystar2 DVB card, such as Music Videos and convert them to fit on a Video CD-R.

Ok, thanks. I now got my MPEG 2 re-encoded and its fine.
However TMPGenc gives me another problem now. When I go into MPEG tools and attempt to cut the file TMPGenc hangs. I havnt had this before but have heard that its a common problem. Anyone know the fix?

TMPGenc supports MPEG2 directly but does not like SVCD MPEG2 streams. There is a MPEG2 pluggin you can drop into your TMPGEnc folder and then that eliminated the DVD2SVCD step. Get it from doom9.net download section.

Yes, TMPgenc hanging when trying to cut, on a Win XP system is quite common. Simplest solution is to UPGRADE to Windows 2000 but most wont do that. Try just a simple re-insatll of TMPGEnc (has worked for many) and then try moving the DirectShow priority to the highest (in Options/Enviromental Settings/VFAPI Pluggins).

You can get it from the authors home page at http://www.marumo.ne.jp/mpeg2/ Its in Japanese but just download the m2v_vfp-0.6.21.lzh file, unrar and copy the m2v.vfp file to your TMPGEnc folder.

Ok, I have the file re-encoded and its fine, but I have given up on spltting via MPEG TOOLS in TmpgEnc. Is there any other similar way with any other app? I need the same options to split a chunk from the middle of the MPEG2 file without losing quality.

That looks very promising Chickman. However, I am only looking at using this once in a blue moon. Is there any freeware software available that offers similar functions at half descent quality?
Thanks in advance.

I don't have an issue in getting Tmpgenc to accept my file or encode it. My issue is in the MPEG TOOLS where it hangs my system. It didn't do this when I first installed it. I have given up on it. I have reinstalled it and tried everything I have read. I now seek another software which does a similar thing......

Also for many the original Tmpgenc ver 12a works better as an editor than the latest. A simple search at Google should find it for you. Its freeware and has full suport for MPEG2.

I am planning on dual booting my XP with Win 2000 Pro. As you said "upgrade" to Win 2000. I do not see that as an upgrade but this is just opinion. If I dual boot and run Tmpgenc under 2000 do you think I stand a better chance of this thing not hanging.

I would try ver 12a first and would duel boot to Win98 SE, not a lot of difference between W2k and XP.
