minutes per DVD

Question. How many minutes of high quality mpeg2 will a DVD hold (4.7 GB)? I'm going to be using my HC40 for transferring through the a/d passthrough from my old hi8 2 hour home movies. Is it one hour? if so, should I stop the capture after an hour, and start another capture to create 2 AVIs to put on 2 DVDs, or can I break up a 2 hour AVI after the fact and create 2 mpeg2 files out of it? recommendations welcome. will be burning on TY DVD+R (bitset to DVD-ROM).

Re: minutes per DVD

Moved to video forum.

You can put as many minutes on a DVD as you want, it's purely a matter of the bitrate you use, or compression.

Re: minutes per DVD

Record the whole tape into a long AVI-file. Look at it and determine if you need to crop/add borders and clean it up (this will make a huge inpact on compressiblility). The average bitrate will be around 4100kbps (Video (use VBR)) excluding 192kbps (sound (CBR)) which should be enough if your file doesn't contain much noise which will cause blocks. If you aren't staisfied with the quality bump up the video bitrate and use bbMPEG when it's done to split the files so they fit on a DVD.
