Making a backup copy of a purchased DVD Rom

Hello there. I am new to the world of DVD, and so far have been very impressed by the quality. I have purchased "Ford Fairlane" and as its new, I want to make a backup copy of it. The details of the disk are below:

DVD5: Single Layer
1840SDW
DVD 4 PAL

My DVD Player is a Toshiba SD C2402 (Notebook)
My CDR/RW burner is a Sony CRX-700E (Notebook)

Would any forum member be able to give me any advice as to what software I need to make a successful copy. I have an older version of Clone CD, but it will not copy DVD. many thanks for any help.

Also I notice that the movie, has a black top and bottom boarder when the actual movie starts, but is absent on the intro. I use Win DVD software to play them, and I have selected "Startup in full screen". Is there a way to eliminate the black bands at the top and bottom of the film.

Many thanks for any help. Chris

get dvdx1.8a

it will allow you to make a vcd, svcd or avi/divx of your dvd, that will fit on 1 or 2 normal cdrw or cdr's
You will have los of quality when you make a back-up of cd's
It even allows you to get rid of the black belts on the top and bottom of the movie

the black belts on the movie are caused by the format of the movie......nothing to worry about ..it is normal...some movies have them ..some not

Hi there again! Yes I have found and downloaded the software and installed it. I am a bit of a newbie on this, but the output mode gives you several choices, I notice. Can it make a str8 copy of my new disc, or does it have to be changed to a VCD format (Not sure if VCD and DVD mean the same thang in different countries :-) I dont want to cause anyone a long explanation, except, I have done a default install of this program, will it make a copy of this new disc that I can run with my WinDVD software and play on a home DVD player (Which I am thinking of buying in the next month)? Sorry if this sounds a little bit of a simplistic question :-)

interesting...

if you want to be sure it is playable on most standalone dvd players..go for vcd

but if you go an buy and a new dvd player.....go and find one which is able to play s-vcd's/..the picture quality is better then vcd

go for vcd at the moment, windvd can play vcd (not sure about s-vcd)

Ok thanks for the reply, I'll go for VCD (I guess that is the same as DVD) Mmmm, its not just a str8 copy like clone CD is it? :-). I guess this is all the copy protection stuff that they put on the new DVD's to stop people copying ad hoc. Thanks for your help. I will mess around with this now, till I get a good backup...regards Chris

hi

no vcd is not the same as dvd.....dvd is 100 times better..

perhaps if you buy a dvd writer you can make 1 on 1 copies....with the same quality

when you really want a program who makes it easy to copy dvd to cd (vcd or svcd) buy davideo or moviejack.
you just need to push 3 buttons and it will make a vcd...
you could compare them with a bad copy of clonecd for dvd's

but the quality isn't as good as dvdx1.8...and this one is for free

SmartRipper

Hi there, I've tried ripping DVD movies before and have used a program called SmartRipper, you can get this from:

www.vcdgalaxy.com

It's an all in one program, it decodes the files, rips them and then encodes them into various formats ie Mpeg2 (DVD), Mpeg 1 (VCD) and into PAL and NTSC.

It's a bit fiddly at first but it does the job, be warned though it does take time to carry out so set the priority to high when your carrying out the work.

The files you are left on your HDD can be made easily into VCD's using Nero........VCD wizard.

Hope that helps!!

Sorry my mistake!!

Sorry about that here's the link you need:

http://go.to/vcdgalaxy/

That has the all-in-one program, it's freeware but the Mpeg2 encoding will only work for 21-30 days!!!

Good luck

Re: Making a backup copy of a purchased DVD Rom

You can use DVD Decrypter to make an image of the DVD, as well as copy it to a blank DVD-R. Since the DVD is only single-layer, you won't have to worry about compressing it at all. A good program to use if you backup DVD's that are more than two hours long is DVD Shrink. If you do not want any compression on dual-layer DVD's, you can use DVDXCopy to split the DVD's, or, if you have a dual-layer drive, just buy media to do so, although dual-layer media is a bit more expensive than single-layer. I suspect the price will go down soon though. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask. Take care!
