Check this page out.....

http://www.cdrinfo.com/Sections/Hardware/All.asp

.....DVD-Rom reviews are about half-way through the page.

Also, I have the ASUS E616 which has been terrific with all sorts of tasks, especially DAE.

Thanks man... I have some questions...

I have a plextor 40/12/40 and when I buy the DVD... should I put the DVD as master or slave ?

And one more thing... Is there a way to overrout the RPC2 hardware region changer? I was told you can limit the amount of region changes to 4 and nothing more... Is there a software or something to overcome that ?

thanks in advance. You rock guys.

Ok. I found out that AOPEN has RPC1 .. Which means it is good, and certainly after the firmware upgrades resolved all the mattering issues... BUT IT IS not available in EUROPE... so it's bull...

So I am left with the LiteOn LTD 163 or Liteon LTD 163D...

what is the difference in the "D" ?

thanks for any information.

You'll most likely get better performance with a CDR-Master/DVD-Slave setup. As for your question regarding regions, I believe there is software (DVD Region-Free & DVD Genie come to mind) that allows for the use of all region-coded media in any DVD-Rom, without having to subvert to hardware h4cks. Finally, I can only guess that the "D" is there to point out a certain style (I know that drive has both a white- and black-colored tray) or package, but then it could also be more hardware related. Your call.

The D is a newer version with different hardware since the old 163 parts where phased out.

You don't need a firmware hack... you have DVD Region-Free and it works as a marvel...
