Good authoring software for editing vobs and for making menus?

TMPG DVD Author does a fair job of editing--it can import .vob files, and can do cutting, which is the major portion of editing that I am interested in. But it is quite weak in the menu creation department--for one thing, it does not allow you to set specific links.

DVD Lab, I think, can do everything to a menu that I would want, but is very complicated. I haven't made the effort to try and master it, because as far as I can tell it is not able to simply import DVD files, do minor editing (cutting), and write the DVD files, ala TDA.

I've tried a host of other softwares, but haven't found one to do it. Is there any single software which can do these two tasks?

NeroVision Express 3 (that comes with the Nero 6.6 package) can now rip titles straight off a dvd but it's menu creation is still a bit flakey

The plus side is that it's a free trial download so give it a go, it might be what you are looking for.

Re: Good authoring software for editing vobs and for making menus?

Well, I bought Nero 6 a while ago, and I do still use it for burning, but not for authoring, at which it is extremely limited. And I have a big beef with Ahead (Nero) Software, who charged my credit card twice! That one's still being decided by the card company.

Ulead Movie Factory I gave a try, but it wasn't even close. And, when I tried to try out another Ulead product, it refused to run and accused me of being a software pirate (presumably because I had previously tried the Movie Factory trial--a completely different product by the same company). Needless to say, Ulead won't be getting my business.

I don't mean to sound bitchy, but I call 'em as I see 'em--if companies can't act honestly and in good faith, they won't be seeing any (more) of my money.

There was one product that I was excited about: Pinnacle Studio 9. It appears to have great menu creation abilities, and seems much easier than DVD Lab in menu creation. But since it does not have the ability to import DVD files, it is no use to me.

But please, keep the recommendations coming !

you can allways rip a vob files to mpeg, try using this guide

P.S. don't worry about the bitching, if people don't tell others about the companies that rip them off then they will just go on doing it

You know, I may just have to give that a try, if it's the only way . But I think it's more trouble than what my simple needs require.

TMPG DVD Author is very nice (and easy) at authoring (with some limitations, such as only one audio stream). Studio 9 is very nice (and easy) at menu creation. If someone would put the two of them together, he'd have an ideal product for us relatively undemanding home users who want to easily do simple editing and menu creation, without unnecessary limitations .
