I've seen this program mentioned a few times at videohelp.com and at doom9.org. It looks like it could be a good free option for avi to dvd conversions. I don't really need it, I have other tools for this, but many people come here looking for low cost/free conversion tools and I was wondering if some of you have tried it and compared it to programs like ConvertXtoDVD or DVDFlick.

Since it can use the HC encoder, I'm sure it can produce good results, at least on the encoding side. The authoring section seems a little basic.
I'll probably download it and experiment for a while, but thought I'd check for opinions around here too.

I prefer FAVC with HCenc,or Quenc if you prefer, slow but with a better quality then DVDFlick (which uses ffmpeg) produces,IMO!...I have diff tools/proggies ,just because I like to try them and compare......

I noticed that it is easy to set up Quenc for multiple cpu cores, but the setting is greyed out for HC. I haven't been a big fan of Quenc, but this should speed things up considerably.

After using LabPro for years, the options in the authoring section are definitely sparse. I can't see using it myself, but as a one-step program it looks acceptable. Price is right anyway.

With FAVC HC can be set up to use dual core too, but not in 2-pass mode. Try the Predictive quantization mode. It uses small samples to estimate a constant quant value for a 1-pass encode that will have the quality of a 2-pass encode.

I've been a little sidetracked on trying out this program, but thanks for the heads up on using HC in predictive quantization mode in FAVC. I'll try it on a couple of avis I just got through converting with ProCoder. The output on those was really good, so we'll see what HC can produce in comparison.

Ok, converted two avi's, approx 1gb, to a dvd with FAVC using HC in predictive mode. And set to use a dual core processor. Took about an hour and 10 minutes to complete. Quality is not bad, a bit more pixellation and motion blur than the Procoder version, and it is slightly too small at 4.17gb. Probably need to do a bit more reading on tweaking the settings.

Didn't see a way to manually set chapter points, or adjust title placements on the menu background.

Definitely usable as is, and will undoubtedly get better.
