Editing AVI/Xvid Shut Down Error

I am having an issue on two computers using 2 different softwares.

I have video from RCA Small Wonder. I want to edit videos.

The original are AVI with XVid Mpeg-4 (according to windows media).

I am trying to edit on one computer with Nero Vision and the other using Windows Movie Maker. The same thing happens:

I start the editing process by importing the AVI. I preview a little, then try to move the start point, basic beginning operations getting ready to put a cut or whatever. Once I preview and pause, I try to do anything else and I get the window saying the program has an Error and must shut down.

According to Even View, the error seems to be coming from "Faulty Module xvidcore.dll, version 0.0.0.0" (both machines). I downloaded the earliest XVid Codec, but that doesn't seem to help.

Any suggestions?

Re: Editing AVI/Xvid Shut Down Error

If you want to edit your xvid video you may need to DEMUX your video, before you can edit it.

Better you use the ORIGINAL instead of a downconverted copy!

Thanks for the advice. Though, I don't know what DEMUX is. I will do some research. Any advise in this would be very helpful.

I am using an original, straight from the memory card. It appears Movie Magic and Nero don't like AVI/XVid combo. Or perhaps, it is something else. Why the shut down?

Re: Editing AVI/Xvid Shut Down Error

If I google your video camera, one of the first web sites I go to, says that the camera comes with it's own unique software to use for viewing the video.

Are you doing that? There are numerous hardware devices which only work with software made specifically for that device, and other softwares will not work with the output for some devices. Read the instructions that came with the camera and/or check the manufacturers web site. Also check google...

I tried the software that comes with the camera, very limited as you can imagine. I can't even split, timeline, etc. I didn't see any mention of using other editing software, but I will check further.

It seems that converting the file first may be my only option.
