DVD-ROM won't read anything BUT DVDs - Club CDFreaks

After wasting an hour of time with HP tech support (call me a fool..) trying to get this working...ugh..

I have a Samsung SD-616F DVD drive. It will read only DVDs, and will not read CDs of any other kind.

Anyone know where I could start looking to fix this problem? I'm totally at a loss.

just wondering what model is your HP ?
i have a HP 9870
the dvd drive is a Samsung SD-612B
it reads pretty much everything, CDR/CDRW
no problems here.

HP pavilion 750n.

I hear tell that to get the DVD drive replaced / fixed I have to have London Drugs SEND IT IN TO HP (the whole freakin' computer) for up to three weeks.
