DVD Rip speed

Trying to Rip a dvd with various s/w max speed is x2 - way too slow - this is the panasonic A104. Tried in my Panasonic 106 player and runs at 4+ depending on media etc - I am guessing this is a firmware thingy then ? Does anyone know if this is the case and if i can do anything to increase speed - without creating more problems for myself if I take the firmware upgrade option.
