DVD Drive + CD-RW Drive Hi... I'm pretty new to this burning thing, since i only got my first burner a few months ago... Anyway i was wondering if i bought a new DVD drive, i could copy the data from a DVD disc to a CD-R disc with my CD-RW drive.. If yes.... how good would the quality be, and in what format. Just another question about a DVD dive.... i know that the current speed is 16x, do any of you know when a faster one is going to released? And finally how do they measure the speed for DVD drives, is it the same way they do it for a CD drive? -- Thanks in advance..

I'm affraid it's not that simple; you can burn DVD movies to a CDR, BUT they have to be recompressed first. (otherwise you won't get 4Gb+ on one 700Mb disc). Therefor, you'll have to rip the cd first; there are basicly two types of ripping: DivX or mpeg (VideoCD). DivX can only be played back in your PC, VideoCD can be played in standalone hifi DVD/VCDplayers. Piont is: you can't copy a DVD directly to CDR, such a combo-drive doesn't change this. The ripping is a very time-consuming process; depending on your system it can take 4 to 10 hours. Check out the search function to find out more about ripping and what programs to use. (I'm using FlaskMPEG, Adobe Premiere and Virtual Dub) I don't know when new drives are coming out; only time will tell. DVD speed is something different; CDROM 1x is 150Kb/sec, so CDROM 40x is 40 times 150Kb/sec = 6Mb/sec. The "speed-unit" for DVD is much faster; 1x DVD is about 8x CDROM; more or less 1,2Mb/sec. So a 16x DVD is about 20Mb/sec. (the DVD speeds aren't 100% correct; I don't know them by heart, but it gives you an idea). When you compare the data-transfer of a 16x DVD (about 20Mb/sec) with a 40x CDROM (6Mb/sec) , it gives an indication that DVD's are already pretty fast Although 16x sounds slower than 40x.

Just another question about a DVD dive.... i know that the current speed is 16x, do any of you know when a faster one is going to released? IF faster drives are released, they'll be noisy... And finally how do they measure the speed for DVD drives, is it the same way they do it for a CD drive? 1x CD = 150 kB/s, 500-200/min 1x DVD = 1380 kB/s, 1400-600/min

In theorie, you could copy the DVD contents to multiple CDRs. However, the vob-files (= DVD videofiles) are 1Gb each, so you would need a vob-editor to cut them into pieces of 700MB max. (which I think isn't very usefull). Keep in mind that, IF you would copy the vob-files to cdr, you'll have to use a specific way of storing them; maps called video_ts and audio_ts etc. In short: I guess it isn't worth the effort ![]() The special features like multiple audio-tracks or extra scenes are mostly lost when converted to DivX or VCD. However, subtitles can be added. There is a way to add a menu-function to VCD's, but it doesn't have the same features like the original DVD. If you want to learn more about ripping, DVD/VCD-standards, DivX in general,.. , you can check out the site alexnoe mentioned. There are many programs and possibilities and it's hard to understand all those things if you're new to it, but it's worth a try
