Almost every comparison I have read about on different forums and my opinion too is xvid is better.

It depends on your personal visual perception. Best way to decide is to encode 2 identical clips from same source with XviD & DivX, then see which you prefer.

I have heard Xvid is better, but I don't know if the diff is that noticeable. I've compared side by side and can't see a diff.

What apps are good to try encoding in both formats for comparison?

Auto-gordian Knot & Fairuse. Both free.

Re: Divx Vs Xvid?

I may try Fairuse. I tried AutoGordianKnot and it just didn't work for me, unfortunately.

I use Dr Divx for standard Divx stuff. Sure wish they had something so simple and stable for Xvid.

Anyways, thanks for the info.

Have also had sync problems with g.knot but the worst one for that is Clonedvd Mobile & I paid 39.00 for that crap. Also it is way off on the finished mb from what you select. Fairuse takes the longest but the sync problems are gone. Thinking about buying the full program as it supports duo processors & hyper threading & is supposedly a lot faster. Also supports H.264 but I dont think that will play on a standalone divx reader. I didnt think Dr. Divx was free. Did I down load the wrong proggy?

I would try Fairuse if I were you as it is the best quality of any I have tried. It also takes the longest. Maybe that is why the quality is so good. You can only go up to 700mb though without purchasing the full program. I usually set it up & go to bed as it takes over 3 hrs. for one movie. Its supposed to have a batch setting but havent figured out how to get it to work yet.

The updated one is open source:

Sorry you got shafted on the CloneDVD mobile thing. Maybe they can make it work after some reprogramming.

I don't really understand all the new stuff like H.264. I know about Mpeg 2, and Mpeg 4 (xvid/divx) but that's about all. I gotta do some reading and get caught up, I guess.
