DivX 3.11 vs XVid

Hello!

I would like to have your opinions on encoding using these. To my eyes, DivX 3.11 produces the most transparent (in the sense that I can't distinguish the source and destination) - videos. Im not saying that these are 100% transparent, but the closest to the source.

I am not interested in DVD to AVI conversions. The videos I encode are lower quality video captures from TV.

Also I use Lame 3.92 ACM for audio. Anything that could perform better?

Thanks!

The experiences I have with DivX3.11 are limited (I stopped using it somehow).
But DivX5 gives me a pretty good feeling about quality and seems to output files very close to the original. It requires some tweaking though; largely depending on the source (resolution, "noise" due to bad VHS tapes or cable, interlaced,..)

Have you compared one of your captures -> divx3.11 with capture -> divx5 yet? (from the same sourcefile) I'm very interested in your opinion about that (maybe I'll give 3.11 another chance then )
What resolution do you make your DivX? And bitrate?

Yes Ive compared DivX 3.11 vs DivX 5 and find that DivX 3.11 is much better than DivX 5. So I would rate the quality as

DivX 3.11 > XVID > DivX 5

I usually encode @ 780 - quite sufficient for my captures.

Hmmm... Interesting, for the kind of settings and source you mentioned, the opposite should be true (at least, for my eyes).

Are you using 2-Pass, or straight CBR, because then XviD would perform worse, since it uses a true CBR, not any sort of 1-Pass VBR like DivX 5 and DivX 3.11, when you tell all 3 to perform CBR.

Also, SirDavidGuy, if you could give me some tips on improving quality with XVid (or any link to such site), I would be grateful, coz I always prefer an Open source like XVid vs spyware like DivX n alike

Hmmm... Unfortunately, XviD isn't typically used for this type of scenario. Maybe, if you have the HD space, you could cmpress to HuffyUV, and do an XviD 2-Pass, and see how you like the quality.

Do you mean to say that XVid is optimal only in two pass? I actually never use two pass - Actually I have lots of average sized files to encode - so 2 pass becomes very machanical method. So is DivX 3.11 better over XVid for 1 pass, CBR?

Always 780 kbps CBR for Video and 130 kbps Lame ABR for Audio
