At this price, you speak about DVR-A04, not DVD....and there's no difference between 104 and A04, besides the name.

good:
2x DVD-R (only 2x certified media, such as Verbatim!)
1x DVD-RW (slower than DVD+RW, but slightly more compatible to DVD-ROMs)
of course, it can't write DVD+R(W).

It's good for burning DVDs (because I prefer DVD-, not DVD+), but not CDs!
- overburn CDs up to 82min only
- can't write to crap cd media
- no RAW-DAO/RAW-SAO
- slow bad-sector-skip
- reads only RAW+16
- 200ms access time

=> £199 is a good price for a dvd writer, but you need an additional good cd writer and an additional reader.

I have a Liteon 40x and Liteon DVD-163

And now I would like to buy a DVD writer but I would like to know if the differences between the Pioneer DVR-104 and Pioneer DVR-A04 are big. Because I can still have a Pioneer DVR-104 at £199.

Thnx to answer!

they are exactly the same
apart from the labels printed on the front and top

datasafe dvd-rw at 89p each are perfect for
playing in your liteon 163, every one of my
burns to this media has worked perfectly first time

do not try and save money with bulkcrap or unbranded
dvd-r media.......more trouble than the money you save

The DVR-A04 is the retail version of the drive, which means that the package includes some extras like burning software.
The DVR-104 I have bought was the bulk version, including only the drive without software, cables or even screws!
Apart form that the drives are exactly the same.

Whats wrong with using the DVD writer as a reader.

(Also, my mate has DMA enabled for his 104 and it hasn't yet produced a coaster in about 60 DVD burns!)

200ms access time is boring. Fast Error Skip is terrible, you need 1h to read a SafeDisc CD. It only supports RAW+16 reading. Key2Audio CDs are not recognised.

Ah...for DVD reading: CSS-discs and dual layer discs are only read 2x CLV, single layer non-css at 6x. But the access time is still 200ms.
