Video Edit Software Discuss, Cleaning up old movies at International Chat: Software related forum; I have some old movies which were transferred to VHS, and now I have transferred them to DVD. Is there any software that can do a "despeckle" to clean them up a bit. I have seen this option in Photoshop and the like, but not in video software.

Re: Cleaning up old movies

I know that when I'm using DVD Rebuilder and have a need to do some cleanup, I'll use Undot and Deen with Avisynth. How you'd go about using them seperately, I don't know. Try over at doom9.org in the Avisynth forum.

Re: Cleaning up old movies

Most of the dedicated video editor programs have a range of filters to help correct problems. It really depends on what you need to do and how much. For the money, Ulead VideoStudio 10+ is about as good as it gets, but Adobe Premier is also top quality for the average Joe. Either one will have some learning curve to work through.

Personally, I find that such filters tend to introduce some objectionable qualities as often as they remove them, so I usually just go with the best quality conversion I can get and then just adjust my monitor as needed. The one thing you can't do is ADD clarity or resolution.

When it comes to filtering video, in particular denoising, Avisynth is way superior over all comercial programs. It may take some to get aquainted with it, though.

Re: Cleaning up old movies

Thanks for the feedback. I will look at avisynth as it is free! I have an older version of Ulead but not 10+ but I may have a look at that as well.

Thanks for taking the time to reply!
