As to the time:

4489 MB take 29mins to be recorded to a DVD-R (if proper media is used; someone who uses princo could copy to /dev/null as well).
700 MB take 2:40 to be recorded to a CD-R

But: You have to insert media, it must be recognised, it must be written (this can be done in 2:40), it must be removed, you must create the next file compilation, in case of avi's you must split them, and so on...

==> You can *write* 6 CDs in 16mins, but there's some extra time you need, so dvd-r is not too much slower.

y use dvd-r when datasafe dvd-rw is only 89p
from bigpockets..........
y not use VOBinstantDVD+cd to do packetwriting
and use your dvd-rw as a BIG floppy (2mins to format)
just drag n drop onto the dvd-rw

it takes me 60 mins to write a complete 4.3 gig dvd-rw
(thats the same data as 6 cdrs...works out as 12x cdr writer)
not too bad!

Because I unfortunately noticed that nearly anything besides Mitsubishi (i.e. Verbatim DataLifePlus) is crap media (which is either slow, or unreliable (princo), or can't be read in every dvd-rom (penmax, princo)), so that I could copy to /dev/null as well.

Because all data is gone if your OS crashes.
