Which is the best???? - Club CDFreaks

I am about to buy a new DVD-ROM... I know that the Pionner drives are the best for DVD reading, but that is not a priority for me. I've heard that the Toshiba drives are good for reading cd's which is more important for me. So, now I'm about to decide to buy a Toshiba... Anyone has any idea for anything else????

Really, I have a Pioneer DVD 105 (16x) and it's great for reading CDs and DVDs. I bought it last year, and it's still the best. The highest recommended in the PC Gamer magazine.

Note that I had problems reading crap dvd-r discs with a pioneer 115 (but this problem only showed up with a crap disc; verbatim dvd-r and dvd-rw were read without any issue or spindown at a speed of 2,5x-6x CAV).

Thanks for the help alexnoe!! From what it seems Toshiba does exactly what I need! It goes along perfectly with Clone Cd it has a great average speed, and has smooth movie playback (but with not a good DVD rip average

I am looking for a dvd payer too, though I'll use it to rip & play, mainly.

Take a look at http://www.cdrlabs.com/reviews/
for some reviews. The Toshiba SD-M1612 has lots of good points, but it doesn't do so well in DAE, which you'll need if you rip music.

Please also note that it is not difficult to find this info yourself: a simple websearch with the searchs tring"

One last, important point: even in you don't play a lot of dvd's now, you might in the future. Remember that the firmware, the software inside the dvd-player that controls waht the player can do, is NOT upgradable for this machine.
That means, among other things, that you will have to choose which region you will want to play cd's from, as there is no way to make this drive region-free. So it's (e.g.) either European-made DVD's, or American, but never both. A major negative point for this drive.

Well, first of all I didn't say that I don't play a lot of DVD's... I'm just not very interested in the average DVD speed (by the way the drive excels in the Data DVD's), except of course of the Movie Rip speed which I'm interested and it's not doing very well (AVG: 3.5x). Where did you heard that you cannot upgrade Toshiba's firmware and make it region-free??? I've already downloaded a region-free patch for this DVD-ROM which I haven't checked because simply I haven't bought it yet. Anyway because I live in Greece I haven't got any problems with regions because I'm using only Region 2 DVD's... So the negative things for me are the low average movie ripping and error caused while ripping audio (which doesn't matters me a lot because I can always use my burner for audio ripping).

On the other hand this drive (always in my opinion) has many gifts: It goes along perfectly with Clone Cd, it can read 96 bytes of subchannel data, it's pretty fast and has a smooth movie playback...

Of course I want to note that I haven't yet tested the drive by myself but the above is the conclusion of the reviews I've read and the experiences of other users. I'll let you know when I'll have it tested!!

Can you (all users) give us some info if you're happy or not with you're DVD-ROM and why??? Real life testing I think is more important that some reviews...
