avi > mpeg1 > dvd+r?

Hi

I've got an avi that I have separated the audio from (.wav) using Virtualdub and am at the moment using TMPGEnc to join the audio & video together to make an mpeg (mpeg-1 ntsc I think - my dvd player will play anything lol).

The thing is, it told me the frame rate was 14.987 (or something) and yes I know that is pretty crap, but Im not too worried about great quality for this avi - its rare so just to have it is a bonus lol

Once I have the .mpg file (with the TMPGEnc) can I use Nero to burn it? Or do I need to use TMPGEnc DVDAuthor to do more converting etc?

Hope this is clearer than mud ...... basically I have got an avi & want to convert it to mpeg-something to play on standalone dvd player on a dvd+r disc .... I know I could put it onto cd-r, but Im a lazy git & have got loads of spare dvd+r discs lol

Cheers & sorry for the essay!

TMPGEnc doesnt like anything thats not 23.976, 25 or 29.97 fps. Just about everything else it rejects.

Check out Panasonic MPEG Encoder 2.51, it will convert an AVI of odd frame rates to a VCD MPEG1. Best would be to burn to a CDR and NOT to a DVDR as you would then have to Author it and it would never be a 100% compliant DVD anyway with no guarentees it will play.

TMPGEnc shouold just duplicates frames to achieve 29.976.

You could also try frameserving with AVISynth if you want a little more control.

It's ok!!

I was getting the usual "unsupported" message in TMPGEnc, but downloaded some more codecs then gave in & decided to do vcd's instead, following the (we are not worthy) Chickenman's tutorial & other than burning it, it all worked a treat - thanks again guys!

Re: avi > mpeg1 > dvd+r?

My question is along similar lines to the above.

I had a file:- video.avi
which i converted to:- video.mpg

I want to burn this to a DVD so that I can watch it on my dvd player, I've tried burning the mpg to the disc but the dvd player gave the message cannot play disc.

Can anyone please tell me what i ned to do so that this file can be played on a DVD player.

Thanks for your help!

Re: avi > mpeg1 > dvd+r?

You need to Author the mpg file first to dvd format. DVDLab is a good program for that, then burn the VIDEO_TS folder it produces with Nero or whatever.

Re: avi > mpeg1 > dvd+r?

ChickenMan, this is my first post and I so far I have been able to do everything by myself by reading through this great forum. Until I came across a movie in AVI format and ran into this same problem. I have tried to use DVD Lab to author the mpg file I created out of the AVI but I cannot figure out how to create the VIDEO_TS folder using DVD Lab. Could you write the steps please?

Re: avi > mpeg1 > dvd+r?

When you first run DVDLab, select Simple (Movie Only) and either NTSC or PAL depending on what the movie (if its PAL select PAL, dont start trying to do any conversions here !).

1. Right click and Import your MPEG file. In the popup window, select Demux (the default). Wait a while and you will then see a video & audio streams in your assets window.

2. Drag the Video stream to the Video timeline

3. Drag the Audio to the Audio timeline

4. Set any Chapters you may want.

5. Click the Compile DVD button. Setup Output folder and then Start button.

Soon you will have a VIDEO_TS folder full of VOB, IFO & BUP files ready to burn out with Nero or whatever.

Re: avi > mpeg1 > dvd+r?

Nahhh! Did not work; the mpeg gave me a lot of errors. So, I had a vob file and tried it with DVD Lab and it created and mpv and an ac3 but when I try to compile I get the following error. Even by clicking OK on the error it doesn't do anything else. A screenshot of the error is attached.

Any ideas?

Re: avi > mpeg1 > dvd+r?

Maybe this is the wrong advice but all i do to convert an avi to DVD is use NeroVision Express 3 firstly i run divfix on the avi to fix/remove broken frames etc then just run NeroVision and make a little menu etc and 9 times out of 10 its fine, that 1 time the audio is out of synch arrgh! let me guess wrong advice oh well just my 2 pence

Nothing wrong with that method, just the encoder in NVE is pretty poor so expect poor results. Put a bit more effort into the conversion and you get better quality results, thats all.

In the screen shot, I cant see all the Connections tab and how your set it up, but sounds like first play is the menu but the menu doesnt point to the movie. If its a single movie on a dvd, I'd suggest you dont have a menu at all (like what is there to select ?) and link First Play directly to the movie.
