I've taken 2 AVI files, containing AC3 sound, each of which was 230 MB about.

Joining with that tool: 1 minute
Joining with AVI-Mux GUI: 40 seconds (only supports AVI files)

So which program has better handling of larger files?

The output file of your tools for AVIs even contains first all video data, then all audio (instead of interleaving them).
This makes them hard to replay from CD when using MP3-VBR audio.

For AC3, it uses the same chunks size of 64 kByte, giving unusable, invalid output files (it's actually a bug of the AC3 parse filter that this doesn't work, but muxing tools are the ones which need to compensate for this)

Using a DVD-R as source with a drive that has large seek times on DVD-R, I found that that program only uses the windows cache.

BTW: Unlike this strange tool, AVI-Mux GUI is free, can be downloaded with source code, doesn't contain spam, ads or registering windows, doesn't show any annoying windows (if you encounter one, then tell me...), doesn't create any invalid output files (i hope) and works with MP3-VBR and AC3. It contains an intelligent cache for better performance with CD sources.
Maybe that is because I needed a useful AVI joiner, cutter and muxer...

I haven't checked Open-DML capabilities of your program, but as long as it doesn't handle AC3, you don't need them anyway...

Conclusion: I can't see what you tool is useful for regarding AVI files.
