WinRar problem Hi you all, this is my first time to the forum. I am experiencing a problem with WinRar. I do not seem to be able to split any file with it, since the option Split to volumes, bytes is grayed out. I would like to know what can I do to solve this problem.

![]() @k113gr: have you done some modifications recently in your computer? For example installing some softwares. Have you tried to uninstall and install again WinRAR?

| Re: WinRar problem Mine is not greyed out either, and you are correct geno888 it has nothing to do with file size.

WinRAR cannot split ZIP archives but it can split RAR archives (at least that's the case with v3.51).

Re: WinRar problem Thank you for your replies. To access the Split to volumes option you just have to select the option Add upon opening WinRar and select the file you want to compress. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling WinRar but to no avail. I am trying to create a RAR archive. I am experiencing this problem ever since I installed WinRar and although I have installed some programs recently that must not be the problem, since I do not recall it working ever in the past. I have WinRar version 3.70. I have also tried version 3.50 beta 7 but the same problem occurred there as well.

Re: WinRar problem I had a similar problem with WinRar - I realised that I needed to create a .RAR file (and not a .ZIP file) but when I tried to use the Split to volumes, bytes option it was greyed out! The problem can be replicated (in Version 3.60 beta 8) as follows: 1) Create a temporary directory 2) Copy a large file into the temporary directory 3) Create a Winrar ZIP File (right-click, New... WinRAR Zip Archive) 4) Open the ZIP File (double click on New WinRAR ZIP Archive.ZIP) 5) Click ADD - Select the large file - click OK 6) Click OK to create the ZIP File 7) Close the New WinRAR ZIP file 8) Create a Winrar RAR file (right-click, New... WinRAR RAR Archive) 9) Open the RAR File (double click on New WinRAR Archive.rar) 10) Click ADD - Select the large file - click OK NOW... the Split to Volumes, bytes is GREYED OUT LOOKS LIKE A WINRAR BUG TO ME! To resolve this... 1) Delete ALL ZIP and RAR files in the target directory 2) START... Programs... WinRar... WinRar... (WinRar assumes the last directory) 3) Click ADD to create a NEW archive... Choose the new archive name (defaults to the name of the directory) Just Like magic... the Split to Volumes, Bytes returns! Don't know if this Bug in WinRar is specific to this version! Problem solved

Re: WinRar problem RAR Development have confirmed that it is not currently possible to split any existing RAR file (even if created through Explorer... right-click... New RAR File) therefore suggest you do TWO things... 1) Download the latest version of WINRAR from http://www.rarlab.com 2) Next, create a Split Volume RAR File from START -> Programs -> WinRAR and click ADD which will prompt for the name of a NEW RAR file You should then see the Split to Volume, Bytes option appear
